can I set automatic window refresh?

I'm finding in Windows 7 that when I do things like delete files, after the deletion is complete, the Explorer file window doesn't automatically refresh.

I'm pretty sure this never happened before...

any way to set it to automatically refresh or is it a feature of W7?

Try this with a system restore point first.
Never had a problem, so dont be the first; System Restore can reset the registry if you do not like the results

This should work
Click on Start at the lower left
Type the word regedit in the search box and hit enter
Right click HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and click Find
Type dontrefresh in the search box and then hit enter
You will see DontRefresh, right click it to Modify the settings, set it to 0
Boot your computer. It should be set properly.
Be sure to make a system restore point first, to restore registry if necessary.

What do you mean the file still shows after you have confirmed that you want to delete it?

to refresh just press F5 on the keyboard when you are in any explorer file window or internet browser window

yeah, I know I can press refresh, and I've been doing that, but if I forget it gets me in trouble and wastes time.
I'm not going to mess with the register right now.
I'll hold out until I hear that it can't be done in other ways.

F5 on the keyboard your best bet but each time you do some thing in windows explorer(move a file etc) it refreshes anyhow, if you use google chrome web browser there are extensions you can have that refresh the web pages for you auto.

As I asked before are you saying that when you delete a file it stays showing in Windows explorer until you manually refresh? If so then I think you need to first try the system restore and failing that carry out the regedit

Perform a SFC Scan

1. Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow

2. Type the following command, and then press ENTER:

sfc /scannow

A message will appear stating that 'The system scan will begin'. Be patient because the scan may take some time

3. If any files require a replace SFC will replace them. You may be asked to insert your Windows 7 DVD for this process to continue

4. If everything is okay you should, after the scan, see the following message "Windows resource protection did not find any integrity violations"

5. After the scan has completed, close the command prompt window, restart the computer and check.
