Cannot download applications - error message cites "folder ownership"

O.S. = Windows 7, 64-bit. Browser = Firefox 3.6.28

PROBLEM: I cannot download any applications from any website.

When I click on a website's "download" button, I immediately get a message box which says
" "C:\Users\[my name]\AppData\Local\Temp\[for example]wfxiIAci.exe.part" could not be saved, because you cannot change the contents of that folder. Change the folder properties and try again, or try saving in a different location".

When I checked ownership, "Users" was "Administrators"; "my name" was either "System" or "my name"; "AppData" was "System"; "Temp" was probably "System".

I followed the instructions on a Microsoft "technet" webpage to change the ownership of the tree "C:\Users\[my name]\AppData\Local\Temp" to "Administrators". This did not allow the downloads
or change the message.

Also, the Properties/Security box of my "C:\Users\[my name]" folder includes the Users "Unknown Acct = S-1-5-21-879640176-2077098734-2292519611-1001"
and, "Home Users".

After deleting the computer's Limited Acct, the 2 Users are still listed.

"S-1-5-21-879640176-2077098734-2292519611-1001" is not found by the Yahoo Search Engine. The Windows folder-specific search engine for "C:" and for "Users" searches essentially indefinitely. That for the folder named after myself finds nothing.

Welcome to Seven Forums BigZ. I'd suggest you try changing the downloads folder, then changing it back if that works, to see if the problem is cleared up:

Unable to save or download files - MozillaZine Knowledge Base

It can also be caused by a folder set to read only (unlikely with a temp folder). This seems to have been a FF bug for some time. A Guy

Hello, A Guy:
I read your reply a few hours after it was posted. Since I have been working about
16 hours/day for the last 5 days on an urgent home repair problem, I have had little time to work through the MozillaZine article and its links. Therefore, I would greatly appreciate it if you would check this thread on Thursday Aug. 16, by which time I should have been able to try the various recommendations.

Sincerely, BigZ

I sincerely apologize for the prolonged delay in returning to this thread. I have tried the various solutions referred to on the MozillaZine webpages that "A Guy" graciously cited. None of the internal FFox fixes worked. However, Mozillazine did say that issues with one's anti-virus software can be a cause. My anti-virus engine has been corrupted for weeks. When I installed FFox 3 weeks ago, downloading worked for the first week, but not since. So, I am going to uninstall and replace the anti-virus.

I'm sure you are aware that Firefox 3.6.28 will be the last update to ver3. At some point you will need to update or risk running an insecure browser. You might find that updating to a current version, and creating a whole new profile may fix this issue as well ;)
