Solved Cannot Reinstall MS Office 10 on HP 8460p Windows 7 Pro 64 bit Laptop

I am in the process of doing a clean install on my HP 8460p Windows 7 Pro 64 bit laptop and cannot download and install MS Office 10.
When prompted for the activation key the two options are to activate by telephone or by typing in your key. However, it also states that 'telephone activation is no longer supported for this product' and when I try to type in the activation code ID given, there are only eight fields with six digits in each one but the ID numbers run into a ninth field of which there is none.
This is the same computer that had a valid key but it will not give me a prompt to even try to use it.
Can someone tell me what I can do?

Are you referring to Office 10 (also known as Office XP, released 2001) or do you mean Office 2010, which is Office 14. If you do not have an installation DVD for Office XP, you will have to update to a later version of Office.

You will certainly not find any download site for Office XP. However, you should be able to find a MS download site for Office 2010, but you have to have an activation code for the download.

Ranger4, to answer your questions, It is Office 2010 (Version 14,) and the operating system is Windows 7 Pro plus, 64 bit.
I went to the online chat with someone from Microsoft who decided to uninstall and then reinstall the application.
He got as far as uninstalling it (remotely,) then we were suddenly disconnected and I have not been able to resume that conversation.
I told him I have the valid license key from this same computer and that it was used successfully until I attempted to download it on this same computer while in the process of doing a clean install.
My question to you now is, should I attempt to reinstall Microsoft Office 2010 again on my own, or do I have to try to get back online to a Microsoft technician?

Yes, you should try & reinstall Office 2010. However, you need to be sure Office has completely uninstalled first, after the MS remote uninstall failed.

Read through this MS website for help on uninstalling Office completely. Scroll down a little & click on 2010 for instructions for 2010 removal, there is also an easy removal tool you can use.

When Office has been removed, it is very important that you reboot the computer, before you reinstall Office 2010 again. When prompted for the Activation Code, type it in being careful to get it exactly right. There should be 5 groups of 5 letters & numbers to give 25 in total. The activation code is not the product code.

Just a few other things to consider. Have you activated Windows 7 & have all the updates been installed. It is important that Windows 7 is working properly before installing Office. Some Office 2010 versions are what's called "Click to Run" & they rely on a working internet connection, as most of the installation downloads during the install process, so if your internet connection is slow be sure to give it plenty of time to complete.

Still Cannot Reinstall MS Office 2010 after Completely Uninstalling It

I followed your instructions and removed all traces of the uninstall the was done remotely by a Microsoft technician.
I am using the same activation key that was in use on this computer on a different hard drive before I proceeded to do the clean install.

When I put that drive in, there is no problem. The key is accepted.
But when I try to use that same key in the clean install, it is not accepted.

I am of the understanding that if you have a valid license key it is good for the same computer, even if you use it on a different drive in that computer.

My question is this: Does activation sync the key with the computer or the hard drive?

Just so we are not on crossed wires, you are referring to Activation Code for Office 2010 & not the Activation Code for Windows 7. The code for Windows 7 will not activate Office, it has it's own code.

Activation is tied to the motherboard of the computer, if it falls into that category. Full Retail versions are not locked to the motherboard, but are only valid for use on one computer at any given time.

Is this Office 2010 a full retail version or did it come with a computer, such as Dell or HP?. If it is the latter it could be locked to the motherboard of the computer it is licensed to. Also is this Office 2010 a full version or is it Starter Version, or a Home & Student version?. Starter versions usually only have a few applications installed such as Word & Excel. These versions are often included with the computer as original software & are very likely locked to the motherboard.

You mentioned in your first Post that you could not activate by phone. This MS website might help you get around that. Scroll down & select your location country & try the number listed.

Finally Able To Reinstall MS Office 2010 on HP 8460p laptop

Thankfully, I was finally to install Microsoft Office 2010 on the HP 8460p laptop.
In answer to your previous questions,I did know the difference between Windows 7 and Microsoft Office 2010.
I purchased Office from an online vendor. It was an OEM version from Hewlitt Packard.
I found the correct activation key, finally, and the install proceeded smoothly after that.
