I am running Windows 7. I installed directly from java.com; I have tried this a number of times now with the same result. Most recently, I uninstalled Java first, then rebooted my computer. I ran the debugger while running the test Java page at Java.com. Note: I am not a programmer (although I did do some scientific programming many years ago in Fortran; I have not learned any object-oriented languages). I am also getting very frustrated :-)

I get an application error, General Exception, Name: JUT, NullPointerException: null.

In the Java console I see the following errors (I have left out a lot of intervening stuff but can include it if that will help):

java.net.SocketException: Address family not supported by protocol family: connect (this occurs twice)

com.sun.deploy.net.FailedDownloadException: Unable to load resource: Java Uninstall Applet Caused by: java.net.SocketException: Address family not supported by protocol family: connect

network: Cache entry not found [url: http://java.com/applet/JavaRemovalTool/launch.jnlp, version: null]

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

Sorry if the sounds silly, but why do you need Java installed?

If you need it (perhaps for Open Office databases), then we can work on getting it go install. But most people can live without it installed these days.

Well, it *is* silly, I suppose, but one of my favorite pastimes is Griddlers puzzles (Griddlers.net - Logic puzzles), and they use Java. I understand there are security risks with Java; I run Norton security, and disable Java in the browsers I use most often (Chrome and Firefox); I only enable it in IE, which I don't use for anything else. (Whether this makes it safer or not I don't know, but it does make me feel better).

Could I live a long and happy life without Griddlers? Yes, but I do enjoy them. If I can't do them any more, I'll survive but I will be just a little sadder.

Not silly at all. I had Java installed just for a Word game :-)
...then they took that version of the game down :-(

Which version of IE are you using? IE11?

Try the installer from here:
Download Java Runtime Environment 1.7.0.51 (32-bit) - FileHippo.com
java.png

If that fails, please try to stay awake thru this long thread. I know that the issues in that thread are different from yours, but I'm hoping that something in there might help.

Thanks!

I'm using IE 11.0.4. The installer from FileHippo failed in the usual way. Now I will see if JavaRa will do anything useful - I see it claims to update as well as remove. Wish me luck!

JavaRa didn't help

Nope, JavaRa didn't help either.

Other things I have tried (all with the same unsuccessful result):

Disable Norton firewall and virus

Install both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Java

Still stuck.

I also have a silly question.
Are you now or have you ever installed Advance System Care (A.S.C)?

You might try a total uninstall of Norton before installing Java.

To my knowledge I have never had Advanced System Care; the name doesn't ring a bell, and it doesn't show up on my list of programs.

I'll see about uninstalling Norton; I want to make sure I have the files to reinstall it first.

Thanks!
