This is the first Windows 7 machine I've dealt with that I've encountered this problem with. Basically, I'm trying to test out a program I'm developing (which will eventually have it's own file associations registered by an installer). I'm doing the following:
1. Right-click on the file in Explorer.
2. Select Open or Open With...
3. Click Browse.
4. Select the EXE that represents my program.
5. Click OK.
It pops me back to the Open With dialog but it doesn't add my program to the list of programs, so I cannot select it. All I have are the default options on that screen. Interestingly, I can't even add an installed program such as WinZip or Firefox to that list, so something appears to be broken. The "Always use the selected program" checkbox does not make a difference.
The file type doesn't make a difference, either. I can't, for example, open a .doc file with Firefox by using the menu.
Any tips to troubleshoot?
On a different computer, I am able to use my developed EXE to open the same file using the Open With... menu. What gives?
