Can't connect to shared drives after changing password

Hello all, my main machine Win 7 (connected via wire on my LAN) has 3 HDD, which I share out across my LAN with full permissions enabled.

I recently changed the password on my main machine and lost connectivity from my other machines (two laptops one desktop) I can see the shared drives on the network tree but when I try to connect it tells me I don't have permissions to access the drives.
My feeling is that this is due to the password change, when I originally connect to the networks shares from the other machines I was asked for a username & password, when suppled connection was granted. I did tick the remember password box at this stage.

How do I evoke the username & password dialog box again to re-authenticate with the new password?

Hi, welcome to the forums

If you type credential into the start menu and click 'Credential Manager' you should be able to see ALL stored password details including shared network access passwords. From there you can either 'Remove' or 'Edit' the credential to fit the new criteria, in this case your password.

Thanks Orbital...Learned something new already..but that doesn't solve my problem. I guess I should rephrase my problem.

I can't connect to my network shared drives...I can see them but It says I don't have the correct permissions.

any takers?

You might need to take ownership of the drive/drives.

Right click the drive
Click properties
Click Security tab
Click Advanced
Click Owner tab
Click Edit
Tick "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects"
Select your user profile
Click Apply


You may have to do some clearing of unknown contacts in the
"Group or user names:" box on the Security tab. These sometimes pop up if you disconnect a drive without properly ejecting it safely, of move files/folders that were previously shared in another location.

Reset your shares the way you had it.

I'm not sure if changing your password would do that, but I have seen stranger.

Hello Holy Moses, thanks for taking the time to reply...

I tried taking ownership of the drive as in your first instruction with no luck

However your second link, Sharing and Permissions hit the nail on the head adding everyone to the permissions did it, which leads me to my next curiosity.....if under the drive properties, security there is a group called Authenticated Users which I'm assuming should allow authenticated users access to the said drive??? but when trying to access the shared drive there was no user name and password dialog box presented to authenticate to, thus the "you do not have permission to access this drive" dialog box appearing. This is what I meant in my first post...why did the username & password dialog box not appear to authenticate to??? anyhow it's just me being curious....

No problem.

I am by no means an expert on permissions and advise that you be cautious with them. I only learned the way to take ownership, as described, by pulling out several hairs, spending hours trying to access my own drives....lol. I tend to learn things the hard way, by just fiddling.

I HIGHLY advise you read all you can in this forum's tutorials with regards to this topic.

As far as the password box, I am not totally sure if I understand as I never use the option to password secure my drives. I just share the full root directory of my drives with the network, and keep my personal stuff on my C:\ drive.

As far as enabling Everyone in the groups box and giving Full Control, I only do that as a temporary fix if needed, then trim back the permissions to allow only........

"everyone" will allow......well everyone access....all your PC users, network users etc.
Full control is NOT always a good thing, especially if you have kids or a snoopy room-mate or someone who is crazy click happy with a mouse.

I suggest gaining control of your drives, then dictating your shares/permissions carefully and thoughtfully.
