I have two PCs a desktop and a laptop, both with windows 7.
I was trying to connect both of them through a LAN cable, but they didn't get connected.

I also change the TCP/IPv4 settings,
then my lappy connects to itself & my desktop is connected to a network but their is no connected PC in Network folder.

Both of the PC have no problem while I connect them to ADSL router through LAN cable...

Plz help me, I've to transfer a big amount of data from my desktop to lappy.....

Thnx in Advance!!!!

A regular lan ethernet cable won't work, you need what is called a crossover cable for computer to computer ;)

True if both network cards are 100meg ONLY. If one is 1 GB and the other is 100meg the 1 GB will auto-crossover. All 1 GB cards should have built in auto-crossover, which was part of the 1 GB standard.

If you want to network, with perhaps room for expansion, why not use a Ethernet switch this is much better and they will autosense the connections.

Got a couple questions for you first:

  • You say you've changed the IPv4 settings; what did you change?
Note: setting this to use DHCP (auto assign IP) won't work if it's just two computers and no DHCP server.
  • Do you have a cross-over cable? Or does either one of the computers have a gigabit capable network card?
Successfully connecting each computer to an ADSL router means the cable itself is working, but that's no indication of straight or cross-over.
  • Have you tried running the Network Diagnostics wizard?
Despite any misconceptions around this, it is actually quite a handy tool for finding problems...
With a few more details I'm sure somebody here will find a solution for you. :)

No problem, I saw this thread while looking for more info on a printer sharing issue I'm having at the moment.. Helping people is pretty much second nature for me though, if I can help, I do.
