After fitting a Nvidia NVS 295 card into my new Advent computer (Foxconn mobo, i5, 8GB RAM) my DELL ULTRASHARP U2711 will not display at its maximum 2560 x1400 res. I can only get 1920. In fact 1920 is the highest selectable in the Nvidia control panel. I let the Nvidia installer set up everything without removing the onboard AVG driver first - I assume it did this automatically? I am using the DVI cable that came with the Dell. What am I doing wrong? I have used the latest Windows7 64bit driver download from Nvidia website.

Hi,
http://www.nvidia.com/docs/IO/68245/NV_QNVS_295_US_Mar09_FINAL_LoRes.pdf

States here to use 2560 x 1400 you need to use display port.
DisplayPort to DVI-D (Single Link)

>
industry standard cables can be used to
drive digital displays at resolutions up to
1920 x 1200 @ 60Hz
Your monitor has a display port connector. To utilise full resolution you need that.:)

Yes, I am using a display port to DVI-D adaptor. My suspicion is now that the NVS 295 card comes in 2 different resolutions - 2560 and 1900. I seem to have the lower one. The packaging and website information on this product is very ambiguous.

No you need a display port to display port cable, it stated that in the pdf, DVI maxes out at 1920 x 1200 @ 60Hz
DISPLAY RESOLUTION SUPPORT
Dual DisplayPort outputs drive >>DisplayPort enabled digital displays at resolutions up to 2560 x 1600 @ 60Hz
DisplayPort to DVI-D (Single Link) >>industry standard cables can be used to drive digital displays at resolutions up to 1920 x 1200 @ 60Hz
DisplayPort to VGA and DisplayPort to >>DVI-D (Dual Link) industry standard dongles will be tested for compatibility by NVIDIA as they become available

Crystal clear it is read the pdf I posted above and buy the display port to display port cable and you will get the higher resolution.

I am a home brewer of real ales - I have 2 barrels always on tap! Now stocking up with Xmas 'winter warmers' - 5.7%. Clovelly was in the news last week - heavy rains had caused the river at the top of the hill to burst its banks and flow down the main street all the way down to the harbour - turning the sea red. Might be on youtube.

Glad you got it working and posted back as this will help someone else. That would be my problem with such a high resolution, I could not read the text but for editing photos, wonderful. Enjoy your monitor and have a pint!

Dual Link DVI was used for high res (2560 X 1600) monitors before Display Port became available. (Dual link suggests 2 cables, but it's really one.) You might have gotten 2560 X 1440 if you had a DP to Dual Link adapter. Apparently, you did not.

I write this to correct the impression some may have that you can't get the high-res graphics with DVI. You can, but a Dual Link capable card (and cable) are required.

DisplayPort is best for you, though: no adapters.

The information posted came from the spec sheet on the card. On that card to get higher resolutions you need to use Display Port, this may be the "new norm" and that is why fragilepony was having issues. They keep changing stuff so it becomes even more impotent to check the specs as what did work at one time no longer does on the new card.:)
