Hi, I'm trying to install Minecraft Forge on my PC so I can run Paleocraft mod for my son (age 7, loves his dinos). I went to the minecraftforge.net page.

First I tried to use (Installer-Win). I downloaded the .exe file. When I went to run it, I got the following error:
"This verison of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) verion of the program."
I ran the compatibility troubleshooter, and it told me the file had to be run in Win XP SP 2 mode. When I do that however, nothing happens. The file doesn't run.

Second, I tried to use (Installer). This is a .jar file. Nothing happens when I open it, despite having Java installed (version 7, update 51). Research online shows I need the entire Java SDK installed to open this? It seems inconceivable that people are cluttering up their PCs with the Java SDK to run mods in Minecraft. Is there a better way of doing this?

Thanks!

Hello Arclite,

There is a better way of doing this for what I know. There is a version of modded Minecraft called Technic, it features tons of mods that are instantly playable with the right pack installed. There is also a Dinosaur mod pack on their website that your son may love, but there can be an issue with file space and lagg time but this is natural because of all the mods that are in the packs.

The website for Technic is: Technic Platform

You can also view other mod packs that can be added to the list of default Technic packs, as for the Dinosaur pack that your son wants to play, I highly recommend Ultra Modded-Survival. I believe it features the many different dinos, including Godzilla (if your son likes him). You can find the modpack here: Ultra Modded-Survival - Technic Platform

You will need a paid account for the original Minecraft in order to play in Technic otherwise you will not be able to use the packs.

If you need any more help, just ask and we'll see what we can do to help :).

EDIT: As for getting Minecraft Forge working for you, have you downloaded the latest version of Minecraft Forge or did you get a previous version?

Thanks BlackSparrow, I'll try this in the morning and report back. My machine is fairly high-end (Core i5 @ 3.6GHz, GTX 670, SSD), so hopefully it can handle the Technic mod (nice callout to Lego there).

As for the Minecraft Forge, I got the latest version from files.minecraftforge.net.

EDIT: Oh, yeah. I have a paid copy. I got in during the alpha, about 4 years ago.

Hello again,

It's fine, and I just realized that it may take a while to install. In order to run the Ultra-Survival pack you may need to restart your computer in order to run it properly. If you wish to see what the pack features, you can see the videos done by CaptainSparkles since he plays it. It will also install a different version of Minecraft Forge, so I better let you know that too.

And that is good that you have a paid account, all you need to do is login with your current Minecraft loggin and select the pack to play. After you click "Play" it will start downloading all the mods that are part of the pack, which can take quite a while if your Internet connection is slow.

Hope it turns out OK for you as you play.

download the technic launcher, download and install tekkit via the launcher. then locate the mods folder. download any mods you want via the venders website and then drag and drop them into that folder.

dynamic lighting is another good mod. it means torches create light while in your hand.

Thanks everyone. I got Technic Launcher installed and working. It crashes a lot, so I'm going to try and increase the memory allocated to the Java virtual machine, but that's a post for another day.
