Ok, I bit the bullet and went ahead with the fresh install. Updates now work. Unfortunately, activation doesn't, an even worse, but separate problem. Thanks for the effort, Noel.

Please follow this tutorial and post an MGADiag report - then we can see what the problem is.

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

Ignore errors produced when clicking on the Copy button - they simply mean that the tool could not create the backup files for some reason. The data is still copied to the clipboard for pasting to your response.

Hi Noel. I did see those instructions for activation problems. Since I thought this is a new problem, I started a new thread pertaining to it. But now I have a unifying theory - that this drive was cloned and has an already-in-use key attached to it. The COA on the machine is worn out, but my bet is that it differs from the one that was stored in the restore partition. That probably would explain all the anomalies I've been seeing with this machine.
