Hi All - I'm typing this from memory, so hopefully it's accurate. I'm on windows 7 on a 2011 Dell Inspiron.

I had some spam distributing virus, so I ran the AVG 2013 update. It detected 60+ errors, but when it told me to reboot, it gets as far as a 'microsoft error recovery' screen with options (roughly) of contuing to boot normally or do a fix. The normal boot comes back to the error recovery, the fix option requests I use the windows disc and reboot - when I do it whirrs and comes back to the error recovery.

F8/safe mode doesn't work, and the F2/F12 options so I seem to be stuck without getting in.

Any help greatfully received.

Thanks

Steve

Hello Steve and welcome to Seven Forums.

Would you happen to know what the boot order is in the BIOS? If the CD/DVD drive is the first option (rather than the internal hard drive) you could try inserting the Windows disk into the CD/DVD drive, power on the computer, and (hopefully) get a message to "Press any key to boot from CD". If this works, you should be able to access the System Recovery Options which includes startup repair, system restore, etc.

If the CD/DVD drive is not the first option you'll have to enter the BIOS to change the boot order.
