If you can't remember your password then don't set one up.

You can run HP System Recovery which on modern HP's has a minimal Recovery without all of the corrupting bloatware and duplicate utilities that have better versions built into Win7.

However to get the very best performance I would do what most tech enthusiasts do and Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7. Everything you need is in the blue link.

dont recall seeing any options, seemed to be restore all to factory condition. since office 2010 paid for is now 2010 starter, I guess it zapped the files needed to prove it was paid for?

You could have audited the Product Key had you read Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7
which provides everything that needs to be remembered before reinstall.

If you ran full Recovery be aware it is the worst possible install of Win7, given the horrible load of HP crapware which smothers Win7 native performance. You can try to Clean Up Factory Bloatware but it most likely will still be an inferior install to the Clean Reinstall.

I figured there was another way, I was in a pinch for time and just did what I knew would work. thanks for the help. :)
