Solved Can't seem to get elevated cmd prompt to work

I have been trying to register a program I bought and they tell me I must be logged in as Admin.

When I try to get to the elevated CMD prompt I am entering: net user administrator /active:yes

I get an ERROR 5 message and nothing happens.

I have also tried to use the other method using the Computer Management | Users method and enabling the account there. I don't see anything happening when I do this unless I have to reboot the machine, which I haven't tried.

The admin account is simply administrator and has not been renamed to something else and there is no password. I have used the CMD prompt method before and it worked fine now for some reason it won't.

Never heard of a program you are trying to register need you to be an admin, what`s the program ?

Right click on command prompt to run as admin.

It was MalwareBytes and the this idea came from the so called "Help Desk."

Turns out the S/N was wrong and that's the reason it wouldn't activate.

I was trying to get Admin privileges so I could log in that way:

Enable the (Hidden) Administrator Account on Windows 7, 8, or Vista

But I found that using Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Computer Management |Users etc. Allowed me to do the same thing. But since all that wasn't needed due to a misprinted registration number on the software, the Admin account wasn't needed in the first place.

It's all good I now have at least 2 ways to get to the Admin account if I ever need it. I thought was I was being told was BS and it was.

Sure sounds like BS. But it is good that you got it sorted out.

If you want to run a particular program all the time as admin - e.g. cmd - make a shortcut of the program .exe. Then right click on that shortcut > Properties > Advanced button > and check the little box " Run as Administrator ". Then it will always run in elevated mode when you start it from that shortcut (could be a shortcut in the taskbar too).

Thanks! Nice tip I do have a satellite tracking program that needs that tweak. I'll be sure to use it ASAP.
