Centrino 1030n single band - Need Advice on WLAN Configuration pls

Hi all,

i am confused which is the best fastest configuration for me :-
my wlan adapter is the Intel Centrino 1030n Single Band (2.4ghz).

the way i see it, i have 6 configs i can choose from, but i cannot tell which is the best. Perhaps you could advise me. my Router is DLINK DIR-850L and inside router setting, both 2.4ghz and 5.2 are enabled. latching on to the 5.2 is of course not available to me, a limitation of the single-band centrino 1030n.

but that doesn't matter. when it comes to 2.4ghz channel frequency, which is the best config :-

A. On Adapter>Advanced>802.11n Channel Width for Band 2.4ghz = 20mhz Only

A1. (20mhz) Use Intel Connection Settings - Mixed Band.
A2. (20mhz) Use Intel Connection Settings - 2.4ghz Only.
A3. (20mhz) Don't use Intel Connection Settings at all.

B. On Adapter>Advanced>802.11n Channel Width for Band 2.4ghz = Auto (I don't get 40 or anything else, just these 2 choices 20 or auto)

B1. (Auto) Use Intel Connection Settings - Mixed Band.
B2. (Auto) Use Intel Connection Settings - 2.4ghz Only.
B3. (Auto) Don't use Intel Connection Settings at all.

So out of these 6 possible configurations (A1-3, and B1-3), which should i choose.

Since 802.11n is 2.4 GHz and 5 GHZ and since you don't have 5 GHz capability, then the obvious answer would be 2.4 GHZ only. Mixed mode would be meaningless.

I don't know what the 20 MHz thing is to be honest. Maybe channel bandwidth. You're probably better with auto. Also, use channels 1, 6 or 11 as they are non-overlapping channels and can help your connection. You might want to run Wireless NetworkWatcher and see who has what channel at what is the least Db on a channel for 1, 6. and 11. Wireless Network Watcher - Show who is connected to your wireless network

So if you have someone using channel 1 at 50 Db, someone with channel 6 at 30 Db and someone with channel 11 at 20 Db, I'd use 11 since that person is far off.

Hey F22 that makes sense. but dont forget the band selection of mixed, 2.4, and 5.2 are only available if i select 'enable intel connection settings'. this must have been feature of the 1030n drivers. actually i do not have to even enable it. Was asking you if you think this is actually necessary. i will try take a screenshot of that option later.

Another pc also uses Intel card, the 4965 AGN... and that one does not have this feature. that one is single band for 802.11n Channel for Band 5.2

As for channel width, i am of the same opinion Auto may be better. but strangely intel says 20 is important enough for it to be default. i dont get to choose 20, 40, etc. only 20 or auto.

If your router is only 2.4 GHz, then the answer is obvious. If you have a router that is 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, then you could use both, but 5 GHz has trouble penetrating walls. However, a lot of people use 802.11 AC which is 5 GHz only which would work well in a crowded area. You have 802.11n which is 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.
