Hi all
Im currently changing all the icons and folders to a new design and have done all apart from the start menu icons ie run / default programs / Devices and printers.
Under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT_CLSID ive found the reg keys but when i try and change the default icon number i get
Cannot edit-error writing the values new contents.

Anyone know how to edit these please or why im getting the error message

Also does anyone have to hand the keys for
Administrative tools and Devices and Printers just to save me about 6 hrs searching
Thankyou

You're most likely getting the error message because your user account has insufficient rights to do so.
If you're able to edit imageres.dll, you should consider editing the 100 icon in there instead, rather than messing with the registry.

Yes, sorry.
The builtin admin account doesnt have access. Only the TrustedInstaller account would, which isnt a user account and cant be logged into. Changing the access rights on the key would work, but isnt recommended.

Inside imageres.dll, you shouldnt need to change the numbers around. If you notice, there are several icon numbers that have the same icon, but at different bit levels and resolutions.
For instance, icons 98-101 are all the same image, but different resolutions. It looks like its 16bit too.
These are what you'd need to edit. Recreate the icon you want, save it as 16bit bmp at those resolutions, then replace them.
Icons 102-105 are the same icon, at those resolutions. Looks like 24bit, so you'l need to recreate the icon you want and save as 24bit bmp and replace.
107-110, again is the same icon, most likely to be 32bit bmp's.

In short, to fully customise it with full compatibility, you'll end up with about 12 copies of the same icon, at different 4 resolutions at 3 different bit levels.
