Hello, I bought a new Cisco Linksys E2500, Advanced Dual-Band N Router. I am going to convert from wired ports around the house to wireless. And received a new tablet and I must go wireless now. I have not set up the new tablet as yet. The new router has a 5Ghz band and 2.4 GHz band. I gave each band it's own user name and password. However, my wireless signal can only bring up the 2.4GHz. I called Linksys and they said the 5GHz was for heavy gaming and the 2.4 was for every day wireless use. I am not a gamer. Would there be a reason to keep this split type of gigahertz? I have tried to connect to the 5GHz band but it automatically defaults to the 2.4 band. Is the speed slower on the 2.4GHz band? Thank you!

Hi Aurora,

It all depends on the receiver each device has. Some devices have 2.4GHz and some have 5GHz.

For example, my phone can pick up 5GHz, whilst my PC can only pick up 2.4GHz.

Thank you Andrew, I thought the 5gig would be my main and the 2.4 as a fall back. I will go into the router and rename them properly (and for what purpose they serve). I don't have an extra, extra smart phone right now but I could get one someday. So will keep the dual band. And who knows,,, maybe someday I will need to play one of those (survival) war games, etc. in the bunker...... :-D Thank you so much for the lesson!
