Codecs in Windows 7

I was trying to edit a .ogv video file with WLMM. It told me that it cannot deal with is because it does not have the .ogv codec.

However, I can play the .ogv file in Windows Media Player. What is the deal ? Does the WMP have it's own private set of codecs like VLC (which can also play .ogv). I always thought that the codecs are system wide.

WMP can play ogv files with the support of some external codec pack like klite.

Actually for WMP you do not need any codec pack. It plays it native. But WLMM does not work. I have no codec pack on my system.

I am not sure how much reliable this source is, but it lists up the programs opening ogv files that excludes WMP.

I don't care what they say. I just ran the .ogv file in WMP. And it runs perfectly well.

It is odd Wolfgang, WMP can play the file and WLMM cannot.

It took me a while to find this, not sure it applies or will help. On the MS board, there's mention of a Fixit as well as an opensource codec checker.

I've found that for the most part codecs are system wide, except where an app such as VLC maintains it's own set.

I also found references to turning off transcoding and or specific codecs. Again, I'm not sure if that applies or will help.

Usually Yes. But thats not always the case. Some players or encoders use thier own.


OGG usually requires some form of 3rd party codec for WMP to play though. Not sure how you are able to play it in WMP without any extra codec.


Sorry couldn't really help. Not really all that familiar with OGG or WLMM.
However, I can tell you that even if you have 3rd party codecs installed, that doesn't neccesarily mean WLMM will be able to use them as well.

Wishmaster, if you happen to have an ogv file, right click on it > Open with > Choose defaulr program . navigate to the WMP .exe in Program files > use that. Then you will see that it plays.

PS: The Fixit did not help WLMM

Are you trying to open with or import the ogv file? This is just for my own information, I know you're a smart cookie.

Hi Keith, of course I can convert it. Format Factory converts it easily to anything. But the ogv file was only a test file I produced on my Mint system. It is kind of an academic exercise because I wanted to find out why WMP could deal with it an WLMM cannot. Because ultimately I would like to edit the files I produce in Mint using WLMM - if possible without prior conversion. (Mint has a real nifty high quality recording program)

I could, of course, edit it in Mint with Avidemux. But that is more restrictive than WLMM. Files have to be equal in all their parameters and then you always have to align the cuts on Key Frames. That means you have to produce a lot of Key Frames during the recording which makes the files bigger.

I always thought that the codecs in Windows apply to all Windows programs. But apparently there is something special that WMP does which WLMM cannot do.

For WMP I just went to 'Open with' and drilled down to the wmp.exe in program files and ran it with that default.
In WLMM I just opened it and got the message that WLMM does not support the filetype.

I haven't used WLMM for a few years (3 or 4), but I understand acedemic excercises.

I seem to recall WLMM behaving differently depending if you open a file or import media into a project. Memory being what it is, they might be the same function. This is the last of my "suggestions", because I don't have a definitive answer and I don't want to waste your time.

I'll stay subscribed to see if this issue has an answer. Good luck.

Same problem. When you try import (used a stick with a copy of the .ogv file), it does not recognize the file.

No need to get too excited about it. As I said, it is only my academic interest. I have many ways to work around that problem.
