COM Surrogate has stopped working...

is there any proper solution for this problem...whenever i open pictures the "COM Surrogate has stopped working" comes.i set it with some ways after searching from google but it comes again..

The default thumbnails (i.e. "icons" of one size or another) view for that folder is having a problem with getting the thumbnail for one of the picture files in that folder.

Change your "view" for that folder to "List" or "details", rather than one of the several "icons" views, and the problem will disappear.

I understand. But the cause is some type of a problem with one of the pictures in the folder, so that the thumbnail for it cannot be produced for the "icons" view you've got specified.

If you watch the population of the icons sequentially, I'm sure it will stop when the "bad one" is reached. That's when the "COM Surrogate" crash message will appear. Same thing happens for a video folder, if there's some problem with a video file.

Unless you remove the problem picture which is causing the problem from the folder that is being opened, this crash is just going to continue to occur every time you open that folder... unless you change the "view" for that folder from one of the "icons" views to either "list" or "details", which does not require a thumbnail.

If you move the problem picture (assuming you figure out which one it is) to another folder, then this folder will [hopefully] once again be usable for one of the "icons" thumbnails views, assuming no other problem picture files.

igdumd32.dll is a dll of the Intel Graphics Accelerator Driver. What dsperber says sounds wise. You could confirm that by turning thumbnail display off.

Open any folder> Click the Organize button> Folder and Search Options> View tab> Click the checkbox for Always show icons, never thumbnails> Apply and OK your way out



If that corrects it, use his method to find the offending image. If not, there are suggestions to fix the COM Surrogate issue, beginning with the driver update, or uninstalling the driver, and let windows find one on reboot.

The thumbnail may be damaged because it is infected.

Errr, thumbnail view was to test if it works. If so, as dsperber said, watch the thumbs load, and see which image is causing the error. A Guy

I realize that's what you want. But something in one or more picture files in that folder is broken or corrupted or something. Whatever the problem, it's causing the COM Surrogate crash.

So the goal here is to find out which picture file is the culprit, and get rid of it... assuming you want the thumbnail icons. If you don't care, and can use List or Details view, you won't get the crash even leaving that bad picture file in the folder, since with List or Details no thumbnail icons are required to be built by COM Surrogate.


As I suggested, since the presentation order is normally alphabetical by default, I would guess that the population of thumbnails when you open the folder with Explorer would stop when the COM Surrogate crash occurs. If you OK to that message, the thumbnail population should continue on, but I would think the problem picture file will not have a thumbnail. So it should be recognizable easily.

Or, you might create a second empty folder with an icon view, while having the original source folder (with the broken picture in it) in list or details view. Then drag/drop one or several picture files at a time from your current folder to the new folder. With each drop, if an icon view is in effect for the new folder Explorer should again try to build the thumbnail icon. And again, everything should go well until you drop the broken picture file, when I would guess you'll again get the COM Surrogate crash... and you'll again now know that the one you just dropped (or one of several that you just dropped) is the broken culprit.

Again, this is just another way to find the broken picture file which is at the root of your COM Surrogate crash problem. Getting this file out of this folder is your solution, so finding it is your goal to fix your problem. Once you get rid of it, you will no longer have the COM Surrogate crash when opening the folder with Explorer even when you are using an icon thumbnail view since there will no longer be a broken file in that folder.

That's my guess.
