Solved Complete lockup (no BSOD), icon corruption, folder settings forgotten

At that point during in-place Upgrade it's only updating the installer functions needed to get WIn7 onto the machine, nothing more.

Have you downloaded and burned to DVD or written to flash stick your licensed version yet?

What happens when you run it?

I re-downloaded, and burned the DVD again, and this time its gobne though OK.

At the time of wroiting, its just gone back into windows for the first time, and says it is repairing the .net framework version 4.

It was a really slow process, but it did mention some stiff that sounded like things were found that needed fixing, in particular a whole bunch of files in the temp area/ It did a checkdsk which took an unusually long time, and found some things to fix too.

It seems to be doing something, and I'm off to the day job, I think I'll leave it on while I'm at work, and see how it is when I return.

Thanks for the pointers!
Nick

When Repair Install finished, install all Important and Optional Updates which will take several rounds.

Then check the logs for repeat errors, assure a Clean Boot, test the HD (indicated by Disk Check), check System Resources and Generate A System Health Report from Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7.

OK, its all looking good, the only error reported was about some plug and play driver, but everything seem sto be working...

I guess now I just wait and see if it stays up this time!

Keep us posted, and if all is OK you can mark the thread Solved at top.

Will do. Thing is, it's been ok for 3 or 4 days before, so it may be a while before I am sure...

Thanks for the help.

I've now gone a full week without lockups, so I think it's safe to say the problem is solved.

Thanks for you patient help in guiding me through all this!
