computer not responding to keyboard

Computer was working fine. I restarted it and now the computer only responds to the function keys, enter & delete keys but not to typing. I get to the sign in screen, the cursor is blinking but when trying to type in the password in nothing appears on the screen. The numbers lock key is lit, when pressing it, it stays lit. Have swapped keyboards but no joy. Any suggestions?
