Tews, I have read a great deal on the board before joining and have noticed how helpful and knowledgable you are. I was hoping that you wouldn't mind helping me.

I am having problems with my computer restarting, right away, every time I try to shut it down. This occurs with shut down from the Start menu, as well as the computer case. The only way to turn the computer off is to hold down the power switch on the computer case until it turns off.
My operating system is Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit - my Windows version is build 7600 6.1.7600. My computer is an EVGA X58 3X SLI Classified motherboard with the Intel i7-975 Extreme Edition processor, the video card is an EVGA NVIDIA GeForce 295 GTX and there is an integrated sound card. It is powered by a 1KW Silverstone. My BIOS is Phoenix Technologies LTD 6.00 PG 11/25/2009 SMBIOS version 2.5.
My attempts at isolating the problem have included adjustments in the power management scheme all the way to trying to isolate the situation from booting in safe mode. Interestingly enough when I went to 'msconfig' and turned off all 'services', the computer would shut down. So, I tried adding in a few services a time until I found the guilty party. But, there was NO guilty party! I was able to add in all of the 'services' and the computer would shut down - ONCE! After that one time, I was back in the same boat.
I have also tried turning off the firewall, dis-abling the IEEE 1394, turning off the media player sharing, not allowing restart after system failure. None of these has made any difference. Of course, I have already looked to make certain that the shut down button means SHUT DOWN. I have turned off Windows update. On power settings, I have disabled the 'allow wake timers' under the sleep tab and I disabled the USB selective suspend setting.
I have even re-installed the operating system - this has not changed anything. Fortunately, I am able to enter sleep mode without difficulty. This computer is one week old and has behaved this way since I unpacked it from the box. If you have any further suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated.

What are you using for anti virus and what programs came pre installed by the manufactur? I would think along the lines of software conflicts with code that is not microsoft.

There were no programs pre-installed. The anti-virus is microsoft essentials, which I have tried with it off and then on again, without any change.

If you got it to work by disabling services why not do it again and allow multiple reboots inbetween re-enabling each service, assuming you ticked hide all MS services in msconfig their cant be that many to choose from, alternatively have you tried unchecking all under the startup tab to see if it stops the problem

First, I tried it with unchecking everything from the startup tab. Rebooted, then tried to shut down. The computer restarted right away instead of shutting down, as it had been doing. So, I assumed the culprit was not in the startup area. Next, I unchecked ALL the items from services, leaving the 'hide all microsoft services' unchecked. Rebooted, then shut down the computer - and, it stayed off. So, I added back in a few services at a time. Each time, rebooting and shutting down successfully. I was able to add back in all of the services, reboot, and then successfully shut the computer down. However, in the end, it only shut down that one time. When I tried to shut it down for the second time, after all the services had been added back, it restarted right away instead of shutting down.

I would try it again but tick hide all MS services first as the problem will probably be with 3rd party software as opposed to core windows services, worth a try

I did as you suggested and hid all MS services, that left me with only three items to sort out. I unchecked all three, rebooted, and then was able to shut down - TWICE. I added each one back in, rebooting with each and shutting down TWICE with each. Ultimately, they are all three added back in and I have been able to shut down twice after they were all active. What could possibly explain this? The three items are: Adobe Active File Monitor V8, FLEXnet licensing service and NVIDIA Display Driver Service. I will say that once the NVIDIA was added back in, the windows loading screen flashed somewhat with each of the restarts. Is it possible that the NVIDIA is what is really causing me the trouble, and for some reason it is behaving now, except for the flashing? What would happen if I turned the NVIDIA Display Driver Service off on 'msconfig' and left it off? Thank you very much for helping me, I don't know a great deal about computers and this has been very frustrating for me. I have always tried to read as much as I can to solve my own problems, but this one is beginning to get the best of me. Once again, all the help has been much appreciated.

Calla, I think you found your problem. Leave that driver service off for awhile. See what if anything happens odd. Let us know of your findings. Thanks for sharing your testing with us. Hope you enjoy your time here on SF

Unfortunately, I am back in the same boat. How odd that something will work for a moment and then, just as suddenly, stop?! I went back to 'msconfig' and tried to recreate the success of turning off the three items under services - while hiding all the microsoft services, but it changed nothing. I am still restarting right away with every attempted shutdown. Any other suggestions?

Hi calla36! Im sorry it took me so long to respond... This is a strange situation indeed... It looks like you have done just about everything you can to isolate the problem, but no fix seems to be permanent. At this point, I would suggest doing a repair install and see if that does the job.... I wish there were something more that I could suggest, but other than a repair install or a clean install, im stumped.. let us know how it comes out...

calla36; I experience similar shutdown problems with my build. Most consistanly restarts when I use the gui. Here's what I've done so far that may be of help to you.

1. Go to the evga support site and see if there's an updated bois for your board.
1a. Go into your bios settings and disable wake on lan.
2. Create a shortcut on your desktop; Shutdown -s -t 00
3. Go into management and check all your devices, even mouse & keyboard and check your driver/advanced settings for power management - you are likely to find wake on lan or allow device to wake pc. Try disabling all that jazz.
4. Reboot and try the shortcut.

I think if it were mine I would be taking it back to where you bought it, you say you've only had it for a week and it's been like this since unpacking it.

To my mind that says it is faulty and needs returning for a machine that works, as it should.

Sorry for the delay in posting, I was out of town on Monday.

Tews - Thanks for responding. I have completely re-installed Windows and that did not change anything.

Fantail - I went to the EVGA website; and, I am using the most current BIOS. I am using an older USB keyboard and mouse. So, I went through device manager to disable those as well as anything else that was waking the computer. The keyboard and mouse were the only ones that were checked, so I unchecked those. I tried to shutdown and the computer restarted right away, as usual. Next, I went into the BIOS. I did not find anything about 'wake on LAN'. But, under the integrated peripherals menu - onboard device, I saw the TI 1394 setting (Firewire). I have read about some people having problems with their Firewire, so I disabled this. On that same 'onboard device' page, I saw Realtek GigaLan LAN1 and LAN2 - they were both on automatic and neither said anything about wake on LAN; so, I left those alone. Lastly, on that same page, was Realtek Lan PXE Boot ROM, it was already disabled, so I left it alone. I looked through the other menus and all I could find that may possibly be 'wake on LAN' was under the Power Management Setup Menu. I found wake-up by PCI card to be enabled, I disabled it. I do not know how to create the shortcut - Shutdown -s -t 00. Next, I tried to shutdown from Windows and it worked! In fact, it has worked three times so far, even after I rechecked my mouse and keyboard under device manager. In the past, I have had changes work a time or two and then, for whatever reason, switch back to the restarting. But, for now, this is working! Thank you to everyone that has come to help me, I appreciate it.
