Solved config failing after fresh install-many many fails

Hello folk, hoping someone can point us to a resolution here.
We did a fresh install of Windows Seven on our quite old desktop, specs below, and all seemed to go quite well until we got to updating. We got SP1 on, though it took longer than it ought and IIRC we did have a couple of failed installs and invoked a Microsoft Fixit. Couldn't say whether it worked or not, but we got some more updates on after that. We then wanted to put an HP printer driver on, and THAT wanted .NET, and offered to put that on, which it did - version 4.5. After that we started getting configuration difficulties with windows updates. Looking down the failed list we saw .NET 3 there and wondered if that was right. The machine keeps downloading and installing different numbers of updates, but we never get past configuration, so it rolls back. Can you help please? We are reasonably computer savvy, but we do not know what to do or where to look for a solution.
Event viewer defines one of the many many failures as CbsPackageServicingFailure2, and 0x800705b4 and KB3046269 are mentioned as well. Can you help please?

Hello Paws now mate did you clean that drive before installing. I know the install will go over the prvious but parsonally I like to make sure the drive is "spotless" beofre I install that avoids any remnants being left over and mucking up the install.

Now I have an older machine with similar specs and it worked fine but as I said I made sure the drive was cleaned well first. I ended up putting a small SSD in it which is probably the best things to do if the budget will run to one. The 120GB ones are reasonable these days

the disk is an upgrade and can only be run from within Windows, so no empty C:drive. We did a 'custom' install as that seemed to be the only available option, and all seemed to go reasonably well, the first updates came down OK, though we had a couple of fails before SP1 was on. The state of play now is that we can't get it to update and we can't do a re-install either, the machine never completes the tasks required. I think the registry is screwed, so we are thinking of getting a full W7 32bit install from eBay - which will be an OEM of course (the machine is a Novatech not Dell) and doing a clean install from that. We hope this will not be illegal, but we cannot afford retail price. Hopefully that will sort the machine out.

ps I should add that we recognise the Dell setup might not activate, but the plan is we then run the Win 7 upgrade from within Windows - do you think that will work? if it doesn't, plan B is that we put the original XP on, and then use the upgrade.. oy vey - computers are fun Fun FUN!

Mate please be VERY careful buying any Windows from EBay it is fraught with problems and make sure you get the correct bit version - which is what because if the board supports 64bit get it

Using HW Info
PART A:
You can test the volts on the PSU with HW Info HWiNFO, HWiNFO32/64 - Download < download the right bit version and close the right hand window select Sensors and scroll down to the power section where you will see what the volts are doing see my pic. In my pic the section (Nuvoton) with VBATT is a dead give away you are in the section for the rail voltages. There are other section titles and one that pops up often is ITE
Now the voltage on the different rails have to be within 5% =+/- of what is required or the machine will not work properly if at all.

The original right hand window shows the machine running and is handy for that but for looking at the components in some detail close it and use the main left hand side panel

PART B:
Open each small square with + in it on the section the components are in and then click on the individual component/s (it will highlight in blue) - in the right hand side will appear all sorts of details including brands speeds and other essential info that particular device. See pic for example.

thank you kind sir, for your concern. We have taken the drive out, formatted it, put XP on again, and then the upgrade version of Win 7, and all seems to be working as it should now.

That's good the HW Info is worth keeping in mind for the future though as it is a very detailed readout it will give you.

we have HWinfo 32/64, and yes, find it a useful little tool. Have bookmarked the Windows 7 Optimize - might come in useful (thankyou) as hubby has just bought himself a mobo bundle and is in the process of building the new system now (nothing very exciting mind; wouldn't suit a gamer like me) - it will have the new W7 disk installed on it when ready. The vendor of the disk said in his paperwork that if the OS will not activate (because it is a Dell product and this machine is custom-built), that we can get another PID legally through Microsoft. Have not looked into that yet!
