I have bought a new computer about 2 monthes ago (give or take) and I have it set to download automatically.

It rebooted about an hour ago for configuring updates and is currently stuck at 35%. There is a spinning circle nest to the 35% compleate so i know the screen hasn't frozen.

Any suggestions? the computer in question is a Dell Studio XPS with Windows 7 Home Premium and Intel Core i7

Updates sometimes can take a long time. I suggest you leave the computer to finish the task- if required leave it overnight. If its still stuck after that, shut down the computer by holding down the power button. Now reboot from the win7 dvd, tap F8 till you see the advanced boot menu, then choose Repair. Select System restore and choose a point before the updates were downloaded. Go through the restore, then reboot the computer normally.

Now change the update settings to download but let me choose whether to install them. Then install one by one or in small batches.

Good advice Bill, I would also be wary of any graphic or driver updates from Microsoft. I always manually
go to the update site so that I can uncheck any drivers that it might want to download.
