Control over what features in Ultimate get installed ?

While waiting for W7 Ultimate Upgrade to show up in the mail, I have two questions. I think I know the answer to the first one.

Does the installation provide flexibility on what Pro / Ultimate features are installed (or should I say enabled) above and beyond what comes standard with Home Premium? Before posting, I did some searching, and found the following link which includes screen shots. Looks like the answer is "No", at least not that I could find.

So my next question. I just built a PC and mainly want my Windows 7 experience to be that of Home Premium, except for just a couple of extra features I wanted. That probably doessn't sound so smart, since I paid for ultimate, but I can explain (sort of). So how different are the menu selections etc between Ultimate and Home Premium.

I did a clean install from Vista to 7 and was not offered and selection of features and do not know of anyone who has mentioned this in the forum. So I would say there is not selection. You can enable and disable some after installation.

Hopefuily this answers the second question

Welcome to SF!

You can turn off unneeded Windows features after the install. Type turn features into the start menu, and select Turn Windows Features On or Off.

Just a question, why would you want to install all the extra junk just to disable it. what features do you need to add?

Well, that's kind of the issue. I don't want to install all of the extra junk. Just a little of it. XP mode was the thing I was most concerned about not having.

That was the short answer. Here's the long answer, since you asked :D

I should start by saying that I was kind of in a weakened state when I decided to go Ultimate. Not by alcohol or lack of sleep, but by the process of selecting all of the components needed to build a PC for the first time. Felt like I was doing fairly well actually, making good decisions on price vs performance, until ....... the operating system.

Knew I wanted W7. Had been leaning 95% toward Home Premium, except for two things.

(1) Was really concerned about not having XP mode (justified or not).

(2) Thought I stumbled onto a really good deal on Ultimate Upgrade that I didn't want to let slip away, so I jumped. Turns out, the deal is still there as we speak.... Guess I was a little quick on the trigger.

Regarding XP mode, I have some really old programs (mainly one) that I would like to run on this PC if I can, and I couldn't tell whether or not they would run without XP mode. And now since I'm getting Ultimate, guess maybe I'll consider using Bitlocker (but maybe not, since I already use TrueCrypt, when I need encryption for something).

What I didn't want if I could avoid it was a ton of menu options or features that aren't in Home Premium, that I'll never use, just to have one or two extra features. But knew that was a possiblity.

Bottom line, you cannot choose during installation. You can only disable after installation.
