Bought this new just over a fortnight ago It's been running great but because of my recent problems the noise is running me paranoid as hell (too many recent desktop problems). I've had a search around but found little information about the fan, most of the problems seem to be static and rattling noises where as this fan sounds like a little washing machine.

The problem is not consistent nor is it in any specific pattern happens when the computer is idle, sometimes when just browsing the net, haven't been running any heavy stuff either, mostly WMP and some Netflix.

I'm just wondering if it's putting itself under stress or the rest of my computer in harm. I'm not overly worried about the fan noise if it isn't going to be a problem. If I am in risk I'll have to get it replaced ASAP.

Few things to note.

1. The times it gets this noisy is completely random.
2. A simple restart quiets the fan down to a normal level.
3. It's happened when the computer is idle and no background apps open other than Windows 7 processes etc.
4. The video doesn't capture the loudness or the sound all that well, I tried to get best I could.

Have you been monitoring case temperatures??

I listened to your link, but can't draw any conclusions.

Can you tell from Corsair documents if the fan is supposed to be constant RPM?

Is it loud only because it is spinning rapidly? If so, I'd wonder if it was justifiably spinning rapidly--as it might if temps were high.

Or is it only sometimes noisy at a modest RPM? Or is it louder at a given RPM at some times than at others? In those cases, it might be a bad or failing fan.

Tough to judge if you don't have another PSU of the same model to compare.

There are PSUs that do not spin the fan at all unless they are under a decent load. If you are bothered by the noise, you might consider one of those if you can still return the Corsair for a refund or replacement.

All fans PWM; speeds at idle: CPU circa 500 rpm; intake circa 600 rpm; exhaust circa 600 rpm; CPU temps 27 idle and 47 C load in a warm room (27 C/81 F) when running Intel Extreme Tuning Utility stress test.
I think I can hear some roughness at the fan starting up. It shouldn't be heard at all, I have 3 Corsair PSUs and can't hear any of them.
It may be another fan too? I use an empty paper towel tube to isolate noises. Ear to one end and move the other end to different spots and listen.

From the video that was me just shutting the computer down, using open hardware monitor but it doesn't list the PSU, but nothing seems to be running max or to high, it's most certainly the PSU fan having opened it up whilst on nothing is too hot and the GPU is fine as it's brand new also and CPU fan is also solid, but the fan was spinning crazy fast and I can feel the vibrations running through the entire case (when closed up).

A simple shutdown and startup fixes it for several hours or 1-2 hours, like I said the time it sets off is completely random.

You can contact Corsair in the UK(?) they have replaced a PSU for me even when I said I didn't think it was bad.

Haven't had any irregularities for two days now been the average amount of fan noise, no fast spins or vibrations, if it happens again I'll be sure to contact Corsair.

Does it sound anything like this? Mine's being doing this for a few months now and everything still seems fine. I know the video's short but you can sort of hear it kick in.

Sounds like a lawnmower revving up haha, nah nothing like that I'm afraid if it happens again i'll capture a better sound the video of mine is also short and quite hard to pick up.

Put it this way it's louder than my PS3 and I consider the PS3 quite noisy.

Maybe it has quit running? Are you checking to see if the fan runs under a heavy load?
