Crash: Bluescreen - any help appreciated!

Hey, so I have a fresh install of windows 7 64 bit.

This happens. Completely randomly.

The first 'file that helps describe the problem' doesn't exist - could be CCleaner getting over ambitious on start-up?

The second file, when I try to upload, say's that it is invalid. So I have opened it in notepad and I hope it is of some use in a .txt format:

Someone else posted regarding a bluescreen event, and I believe their problem was due to network drivers. Sometimes, after a bluescreen event such as this - on restarting my computer my Wireless internet is not available, and another restart is required. Under Computer>Device Manager i try to enable the problematic driver and it say's "Failed to initialize".

I had enough trouble as it is, trying to locate the correct drivers for my card and am hoping that this problem can be resolved some other way.

My problem is that my Windows/Minidump directory is empty. This is straight after a BSOD. I will disable CCleaner, but any other idea's why my OS is not giving me minidumps?

Edit: C:/windows/minidump added to CCleaner's exclude list. Also, CCleaner won't run on startup any more. Now I wait anxiously for my next BSOD :(.

Bump.

I found a minidump folder full of .dmp files. C:/windows.old/windows/minidump

They are dated from (day/month/year)
06/09/2009
to
01/03/2010

So they are an older bunch, but relatively frequent, occurring as many times as 10 in a month. Can anyone give me any idea's why the most recent .dmp files are nowhere to be found? Ie. one happened yesterday, 24/05/2010

And voila - turns out that it was CCLeaner or something which was destroying the dump files.

The .dmp files you posted are from your old installation and have no bearing to your present problems.. You will need to wait until a new .dmp file is generated... In the mean time you can run sfc /scannow to verify the integrity of your system files...

The old dumps are Windows 7 Beta, so I can't analyze them. The new dmp points to the DirectX portion of your video card. I therefore suggest uninstalling your graphics card drivers and installing the latest drivers from the box at the bottom.

Also, try removing any CD virtualization programs such as Daemon Tools and Alcohol 120%. They use a driver, found in your dmp, sptd.sys, that is notorious for causing BSODs.

Thanks very much! I started running a system scan (scf /scannow) but a BSOD occurred... they seem to get more frequent the more I try to remedy the situation!

Ran it again in safe-mode with cmd prompt and found no issues.

Also just ran a memtest and that turned nothing.

I had reinstalled the nVidia drivers and uninstalled powerISO.

Probably caused by hardware. I know you already did a memory test, but we need to make certain. Please bear with me.

Download a copy of Memtest86 and burn the ISO to a CD using Iso Recorder. Boot from the CD, and leave it running for at least 5 passes.

Try this free stress test: Free Software - GIMPS
Prime95 Setup:
- extract the contents of the zip file to a location of your choice
- double click on the executable file
- select "Just stress testing"
- select the "Blend" test. If you've already run MemTest overnight you may want to run the "Small FFTs" test instead.
- "Number of torture test threads to run" should equal the number of CPU's times 2 (if you're using hyperthreading).
The easiest way to figure this out is to go to Task Manager...Performance tab - and see the number of boxes under CPU Usage History
Then run the test for 6 to 24 hours - or until you get errors (whichever comes first).
The Test selection box and the stress.txt file describes what components that the program stresses.

Used HD Tune (free) to test my hard-drive, 0% damaged blocks returned.

Okay, system has been up and running for about 3 hours now. Not a single bluescreen. Feels nice.

Not sure if it is entirely fixed - but, considering Jonathan_King's signature regarding posting what you did to 'fix it' to help others: Here is what I did.

1) Uninstalled my nVidia (graphics card) drivers. Reinstalled new drivers.
2) Did a fresh reinstall of nVidia Physx.
3) Uninstalled all ISO Image Mounting software (PowerISO and DaemonTools Lite)

At this stage, I had a BSOD, which was apparently caused by hardware malfunction.

4) Downloaded Memtest, burnt to cd, ran for 5 passes - memory okay.
5) Downloaded Prime95, Stress Tests ran for 4 hours - Blend and Small FFT - all okay.
6) Downloaded HD-Tune, full hard-drive scan returned 0% damaged blocks - hard drive okay.

7) Found updated driver software for my chipset (motherboard). Had to download Vista 64bit version, since there was no equivalent Windows 7.

And so far, so good. No blue-screens.

If from what I understand (have learnt in the past 6 hours) about BSOD's - the computer performs a 'dump' of exactly what it is doing the moment the user see's blue. This information is useful (to those who know how to understand it ;)) and allow us to pick out step-by-step what our computer has tripped up on, and helps isolate individual drivers or files which are suspect. Which in turn gives us a hint as to what causes the BSOD.

Would it be safe to say that I was suffering from multiple BSOD's? First, software malfunctioning, possible driver conflict (dodgy install?), and 'notorious image mounting driver'. Secondly, hardware failure - maybe due to out-of-date drivers in use for the chipset?

Anyways, I will post back here if I do get another Bluescreen. Thanks to all those that have helped - if it is well and truly fixed! And if not, you'll be hearing from me soon!

Might I suggest a stickied-thread?
1st - Software Fixes:
Uninstall + Reinstall fresh drivers.
Uninstall suspect software (image mounting software: DaemonTools / PowerISO etc)

2nd - Hardware Checks:
Memtest,
Prime95
HD Tune
etc?
(Is there a way to test a graphics card? For memory/hard-drives it is relatively simple to alter your system accordingly and by trial and error ascertain which piece of hardware is giving you grief - but with graphics cards, it is slightly harder to chop and change unless you have a stock of them somewhere :))

Up time close to 6 hours now - no bluescreens. Whatever I did, it appears to be fixed. Thanks once again and happy glitch-fixing.
