Criminal hacker 'Iceman' gets 13 years

IDG News Service - A former security researcher turned criminal hacker has been sentenced to 13 years in federal prison for hacking into financial institutions and stealing credit card account numbers.

Max Ray Butler, who used the hacker pseudonym Iceman, was sentenced Friday morning in U.S. District Court in Pittsburgh on charges of wire fraud and identity theft. In addition to his 13-year sentence, Butler will face five years of supervised release and must pay US$27.5 million in restitution to his victims, according to Assistant U.S. Attorney Luke Dembosky, who prosecuted the case for the federal government.

Dembosky believes the 13 year sentence is the longest-ever handed down for hacking charges.

I don't understand American sentences , will he do the full 13 inside ?

So what exactly is "five years of supervised release" , Is it like probation or something when he comes out ?

I believe this means he has an obligatory parole of five years starting after the 13 years sentence, so even if he gets paroled before the full time, he's parole period is going to be what remains from that 13 years plus 5 additional years.

That is the way I understand it though I am not that familiar with the federal statutes. To our friends across the pond, laws and sentencing vary in each of the 50 states and the federal sentencing is different yet.

Generally speaking when sentenced to a Federal Penitentiary the rule used to be you did the whole 13 years. And then 5 years of parole. But it seems this is now only applying to blue collar criminals.(Martha Stewart comes to mind) But if he was to get out early then his parole would be the remaining years of the 13 plus an additional 5 years. After a few years he will probably be transfered to a Federal Country club as they have been come to be called, where it is possible for him to leave the Pen and get a job on government owned facility and be allowed to be out for up to 10 hrs a day. I had a acquaintance that got 10 years and everyday he would be taken by bus to the Edwards AFB golf course where he would water and pick up trash and whatever his friends stashed for him. IMO these guys should do real prison time.Supervised release is having to check in with your parole officer at lest once a month and any other conditions agreed upon like he is probably prohibited from ever using a computer again or anything with Internet access, contact with Known felons and whatever else the Judge deems necessary. Supervised release may also include having to wear a GPS locater at all times, I knew someone who had to have that once.

Supervised released is part of a probationary sentence where you have a probation officer. You also have certain terms and conditions to this release. For example, you may have to wear an ankle bracelet, you might have to be in by certain hours, and you may sleep at a custody facility.

Thanks for the heads up , All i can do is offer "Iceman" some advice ...dont pick up the soap in the showers if you drop it

In the U.K you normally do half your sentence , that's if you keep a low profile and don't get into any trouble while doing your jail time. So if you killed someone the minimum "life sentence" is 15 years an you could be out in around 7-8 years and be on license for some time after that ( Same as parole.)

Which to my mind is rubbish, life should mean life not a few years away from home.

Its the same in India too. The maximum life sentence you can get is 14 years with some years taken off for good conduct :huh:
Anyway, most of the laws are still in the British Raj period
