Crucial m4 SSD FW update 000F

I updated within the last day or so. If anything, performance seems snappier, not that it wasn't snappy anyway.

However:

Changes between version 0309 and 0000F include the following changes:

• Improved compatibility with certain SAS expanders and peripheral RAID cards.
• Improved throughput stability under extremely heavy workloads.
• Improved data protection in the event of unexpected, asynchronous power loss.

#1 - a definite "no" for me
#2 - I wish they would define "extremely heavy workloads"
#3 - Not an issue as long as my UPS doesn't fall down on the job

Anyone care to share an opinion on #2?

I need #3. There have been transformers blowing out in my neighborhood. I need better data protection when the power goes out because my power probably will go out sometime.

MJF didn't have a problem with the new FW it just didn't help.

I don't have an m4. I posted what I found as a courtesy to all of you.

Exactly right! It was a good gesture to notify people. Individuals have to make their own decision to upgrade any firmware or stay with the existing firmware.

But to repeat myself - Don't try to rollback the M4 firmware. This is likely to brick your SSD and void your warranty.

Since I am religious about doing my drive images (I kneel and pray before running Macrium), I think I'll stick with 0309. If things go rotten at some point I'll flash the firmware with the new one.

Agreed! NEVER, NEVER flash the firmware of any SSD to an old version.

If the SSD won't work for some reason with the new FW and all other fixes to moboard and Windows are exhausted it may be time to contact the SSD manufacturer to RMA the SSD.
Most SSD have at least a 3 year warranty and some are 5 years.

• Improved resume-time from low power modes, and improved reliability of warm reboot

• I have none of these issues so I'm sticking with the 0309 FW.

Fortunately for me, rolling back from this latest firmware 10G to 0F works fine. With the new 10G firmware, my m4 would sometimes not be recognized by the BIOS on boot, like others have experienced.

The improved TRIM response time for the 10G firmware appears to be at the cost of write latency.

If you really want to see some performance improvements, update to the latest official intel RST drivers 11.6.0.1030. My 4k writes improved form low 80 MB/s to 110 MB/s with these.

I have 3 Crucial SSD's and I flashed the updated firmware on two of them with ease but the one in my main rig wouldn't even with unhooking all other drives it still wasn't being seen by the firmware. So I had to remove it and place it in my laptop and bing, bang, boom.....done and then placed it back in my main rig. I also picked up speed in WEI but it never seemed to slow down in real life.
