Crysis audio crackle/reverb issue

I'm having the audio crackling problem in crysis. With the new game coming out soon, I thought I would play through the original game again and hit the crackle problem. I have been all over the place and tried probably 30 different 'fixes' one of which worked for one start of the game, (this was the config file edit btw) but then stopped working when I closed the game and started it again. I previously played the game when I was still on vista without issue.

I was wondering if any one here might have additional suggestions.

I also for some reason can not get the 64bit exe to launch the game it just sits spinning it's wheels until I manually kill the process. The 32 bit works just fine though.

Having been all over the place looking for a fix for this, I have seen that there is no specific system configuration that seems to lead to this problem. It just randomly affects a lot of machines running vista and win 7.

My system drivers are all as up to date as possible. There is no crash just a horrible crackle/reverb in the game sound that makes it practically unplayable.

This may or may not help since it has been a while since I played Crysis on my win 7 ultimate 64bit system.

I would uninstall and re install a fresh copy of the video and audio drivers, if you use nvidia drivers for you video, don't forget to uninstall the physX drivers as well before attempting to install the new ones.

Also, IIRC, there was a fix about changing the audio from 44100 to 4800 or viceversa.

FYI - I haven't been able to get the "Crysis64.exe" to run on my system either. However the "Crysis.exe" in the "Bin64" folder works just fine. Anyway I don't worry about it because I have no issue with the game starting, or any game issues including crackling sounds. I know this doesn't help you, I just posted for FYI sake.

Also I think AstaLaVista has might be on to something as I vaguely remember seeing something changing the audio from 4400 to 4800 but don't remember where or where the change goes. I assume it would be to the config file but that's a guess as I've never had sound issues to need that fix. You can Google it.

yeah, I tried both that config change, as well as changing the sound settings in windows to correspond. Setting the main exe to compatiblity modes doesn't seem to help either. I suppose I can just play the game with the sound off, though I'll have to turn down difficulty because I won't have as good an idea where stuff is coming from. ...really annoying problem that apparently affects a lot of people.

IIRC, I just went to the Bin64 folder and made a shortcut to the desktop and I played it like that. Now, whether that meant I was playing the 64bit version or not I will never know

No, it is not inside the Config File of the game but on the Setting or Options of your audio in control panel. For instance, I use my Onboard Realteak HD Audio Manager so if I open that Icon on Control Panel and go to the "default format", I can change the 48000 (default) to 44100.

that was what I meant when I said I changed the setting in windows, was that I used the control panel method.
There is also a config file for the game that contains this information.

sys_budget_sysmem = 4096

s_FormatType = 3

I know exactly what all those represent and what the number beside them represents with the exception of formattype which I have left at the default of 3 because I don't have additional information on it.

Have you tried updating your soundcard drivers, as well as DirectX?

I'm a heavy gamer so I'm religious about both. It seems to be a problem with the game engine. Like I said in the OP this problem seems to affect A LOT of people that try to run this game in win 7.

I know a friend with that problem and he uses Win XP. Funny thing is that I didn't have the problem before (it was my machine) but I also was using the onboard audio and not a pci card. I thought it was his soundblaster card :shock:

Yeah, if you look around there are people using just about every make and model of audio card and experiencing this problem. I don't consider xp a fix as it's a dx10 game.

FYI this issue has been around before Windows 7 was released -

- inCrysis - Crysis Forums / Crysis sound problem

The sound issue has also been reported in Crysis Warhead as well - Corrupt sound / sound crackling - Crysis Tech Help - Crysis: EA Forums. Someone posted a fix in that thread but it doesn't look promising.

Hmmmm, either I am not making myself understood or you are not reading my posts correctly... I never said that XP was a fix, I did said my friend had the same problem and he is using XP since you mentioned it was a windows 7 issue. :shock:

Personal experience sorry, it worked properly back when I had xp. It worked in vista. Now that I have 7, this is when the problem developed for me.
I've pretty much given up on it at this point. Short of changing hardware there seems to be no fix for my system, and it just doesn't seem worth it to play one game.

Do you have a soundblaster card? if so, have you tried uninstalling the driver and software and running the onboard chipset only?

Yeah, in a last ditch effort after my last post here, I pulled that card and tried a old generic no name card I had in the other room, the effect was even worse than with this one. On top of that I'm still trying to get things back to normal with this one now, for some reason it's decided to fight me over my headset...
