How to Add or Remove "Lock Computer" from the CTRL+ALT+DEL Screen

   Information
This tutorial will show you how to add or remove the Lock this computer (Windows 7) or Lock (Windows 8) option from the CTRL+ALT+DELETE screen for all or specific users in Windows 7 and Windows 8.


EXAMPLE: CTRL+ALT+DEL screen
NOTE: This is when you press CTRL+ALT+DEL from within Windows.

OPTION ONE

Add or Remove "Lock Computer" from CTRL+ALT+DEL using a REG File

1. Do step 2 or 3 below for what you would like to do.

2. To Add "Lock this Computer" to CTRL+ALT+DEL Screen
NOTE: This is the default setting. A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 4 below. Add_Lock_Computer_CTRL+ALT+DEL.reg

3. To Remove "Lock this Computer" from CTRL+ALT+DEL Screen A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 4 below. Remove_Lock_Computer_CTRL+ALT+DEL.reg

Download


4. Save the .reg file to your desktop.

5. Double click/tap on the downloaded .reg file to merge it.

6. Click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK when prompted.

7. Log off and log on, or restart the computer to fully apply.

8. When done, you can delete the downloaded .reg file if you like.



OPTION TWO

Add or Remove "Lock Computer" from CTRL+ALT+DEL in Group Policy

1. Open the all users, specific users or groups, or all users except administrators Local Group Policy Editor for how you want this policy applied.

2. In the left pane, click/tap on to expand User Configuration, Administrative Templates, System, and Ctrl+Alt+Del Options. (See screenshot below) Lock_Computer_Group_Policy.jpg
3. In the right pane of Ctrl+Alt+Del Options, double click/tap on Remove Lock Computer to edit it. (See screenshot above)

4. To Add "Lock this Computer" to CTRL+ALT+DEL Screen A) Select (dot) either Not Configured or Disabled, and go to step 6 below. (See screenshot below step 6)
NOTE: Not Configured is the default setting.
5. To Remove "Lock this Computer" from CTRL+ALT+DEL Screen A) Select (dot) Enabled, and go to step 6 below. (See screenshot below step 6)
6. Click/tap on OK. (See screenshot below) Lock_Computer_Edit.jpg
7. Close the Local Group Policy Editor window.

The Registry mod only changes the current user.

Hey. Any way to create a desktop shortcut button for the Ctrl-alt-delete taskmanager window red button to the lower right? Love how fast it works but would like (if possible) to make it a 1-click access affair. Jim:D

I'm not quite sure what you're wanting since the Task Manager doesn't have a red button. Could you post a screenshot showing what it is?

will do if really needed but how about just hitting CTRL-Alt-Delete and look in that window to the lower right and you will see the red icon type button there. Just did it again. Its there my friend. James

Ah, ok. You're referring to the power menu (red button) on the Ctrl+Alt+Del screen. The Task Manager bit with the red button was what confused me.

I'm not aware of a shortcut to open directly to that other than pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del.
