Defragmentation Problems

Hey,

I recently bought a new hard drive and have noticed that it refuses to defrag. Its 500gb partitioned as follows:

C:
80gb total
20.3gb used
59.7gb free (75%)

31% fragmentation

D:
385.9gb total
42.8gb used
342.9gb free (89%)

74% fragmentation

When running a defrag with Defraggler and the Windows defragmenter, they both fail to reduce the number of fragments. Following some advice, I have run a chkdsk on both partitions and run the "sfc /scannow" command, they have fixed some errors but haven't fixed the defrag problem.

I have tried to defrag single files in Defraggler but I end up with the message "Defragmetation Complete. No files were defragmented." and running the program in debug mode let me know that it is unable to move the files.

I have run a number of disk checks which have all said that the drive is working fine.

Any help would be much appreciated, thanks

What kind of Hard Drive you have? Is it connected by SATA, is it in the right port?

Windows 7 Defrag should be your testing point. I just ran a defrag and it took 5 minutes.

Did you modify the scheduler for system defrags?

Check your hard disk for errors

You can solve some computer problems and improve the performance of your computer by making sure that your hard disk has no errors.

1. Go to Start and Open Computer.
2. Right-click the hard disk that you want to check, and then click Properties.
3. Click the Tools tab, and then, under Error-checking, click Check now.
   
   If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
   To automatically repair problems with files and folders that the scan detects, select Automatically fix file system errors. Otherwise, the disk check will report problems but not fix them.
   To perform a thorough disk check, select Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. This scan attempts to find and repair physical errors on the hard disk itself, and it can take much longer to complete.
   To check for both file errors and physical errors, select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.
4. Click Start.

Depending on the size of your hard disk, this might take several minutes. For best results, don't use your computer for any other tasks while it is checking for errors.
Note

• If you select Automatically fix file system errors for a disk that is in use (for example, the partition that contains Windows), you'll be prompted to reschedule the disk check for the next time you restart your computer.

Its an IDE hdd
I turned it off in the task scheduler, just re-enabled it.

At bootup, Pagedefrag says that access is denied to some files, Defraggler is also saying that it doesnt have permission to move files even whilst its running as admin.

Did you turn off any more services? These "tweaks" sometimes break things, which is why its not recommended.

Turn off PC.

No, that was the only one I turned off

No errors are shown during the defrag, it goes through four stages and completes normally but there is no reduction in fragmentation.

Windows and Defraggler are showing two different numbers for some reason too :S

Its gone midnight here so im off to bed. Ill check back in the morning!

Just use Windows Disk Defragmenter, judging by the other image, it looks like you only analyze the disk.

Click on the C drive and then hit Defragment Disk.

I only analysed the disk so that you could see the fragmentation of the drives that it shows, there's not point running a defrag if its only going to attempt and fail to move every single file on the drive.

I ran another defrag, no effect.

We have to wait for someone else to pass through- I'm out of options for now. Never had a disk that didn't want to defrag itself.

I think it may be a permissions problem, access denied or unable to move keep appearing in logs.

Would you be able to give me a list of default drive permissions so I can compare please?

Do you know which are the fragmented files? That would help narrow down the problem IMHO. The windows defragger is unable to defrag several system files and large files (if free space is low), but since you have plenty of free space for the defrag and all the disk checks are uneventful, I'd guess that it's the type of fragmented file that's causing the problem. Also, IIRC, the windows defragger avoids defragging fragments larger than 64MB (by default), maybe the possible presence of these fragments is preventing a defrag of other files...just my guess and I could be wrong.

Alot of the files are those from games and are larger than 64mb, but if I select a 5KB file, it wont defrag either.

I have uploaded a a list of all the fragmented files.
