Dell admits installing security hole on laptops, apologizes,offers fix

One of the articles say it affects computers shipped since August but I'll still check. How is the update being pushed though? Through preinstalled software?

I think it is both ways. I remember installing dell detect at one time but not sure when it was. I went ahead and did another clean install just to be safe but I didn't have any signs of it. I use windows update from my drivers or the driver disk* & other stuff, works better.




*Don't select the dell detect update tool from the driver disk as well.

I don't like that DELL detect tool at all, it is mostly not working, I think in 5 years it worked once for me. I also don't use Del Dock

I like DELL for the hardware, not the software so much, still it's my 3th DELL Laptop, well the first was a give away so not really a choice

Yep never good to see happening,
But if you don't make sure the manufacture sends a clean install disk with a purchase or accommodate buying one outright then you must of just fell off the moon

Personally I would clean install on a new ssd and put the oem in a drawer incase hardware failure occurs within the warrantee period

I had to fight to get that a while ago , most manufacturers don't include that anymore , just a dumb recovery partition.

Yep they know full well with a clean install disk they can't add all of their crapware to it and people would actually use it either as soon as they get the machine or soon after the 1 year.. warrantee expires

I run this Malwarebytes Antirootkit application from time to time.
I haven't had a problem but note the caution.
