Diablo 2 Problem

Smash

Diablo 2 is running at very low fps(20-25), did a fresh install of the game and when it finished installing it gave me a message saying there are known compalibility issues with the game but windows searches for them and can't find anything. When I ran it with Xp I was getting like 140+ fps so its something to do with windows 7. I'm running as administrator and 2d direct(also tried 3d direct, didn't change anything). Don't know if anyone knows any solutions to this ancient game :D but anything is appreciated!

When running low FPS, did you try to lower the screen resolution in the game?

LoL. Don't know why that guy suggested lowering the res. The game only runs at VGA grade anyway
unless you use the 3dfx glide wrapper and it can run at 800x600 then.

I did a google search and found this:
Battle.net - English Forums -> Windows Vista/7 and Diablo II
First post there may help.

I found this statement in another thread by someone:
"I play D2 on Windows 7 very regularly. Download the game from battle.net instead of installing it from CD, and the whole experience is very easy. "

That was in reference to people having major issues doing the game install from Diablo II DVD's on Win 7 systems.

Actually there's quite of bit of noise on the net about Windows 7 and Diablo 2. I may have to try to reinstall
it here just for chits n giggles. I'll see if Battle Net will let me download for free and if my old DVD keys will
work. If so, I'll repost my results later today. hah.

Last time I did look at it though I puked (that was some years ago) when I saw it on my 1920x1200 screen it just looked like ass.
I remember the only way the game looked half decent was with 3dfx card (which I had) OR if no 3dfx card
using the Glide Wrapper 'hack' that is still around. Diablo 2 was best looking in Glide mode and that wasn't just any glide it had to be 3dfx's funky version of Glide.

Just a thought here. I find Torchlight an acceptable alternative to my old
Diablo 2 thrills and habit. Torchlight is no Diablo 2 but damn close. Sure looks decent on modern systems...
Titan Quest wasn't bad either and sure looked a lot better.

Okay, I just finished what I said I was going to do. what a trip down memory lane!
Old Diablo II junky and it's been years since I looked again. Lord, pixel graphics! Yay.

Anyway, this was fun. Short story:
Found my old D2 and D2 LOD CD install keys (which had orginally been registered
to the very old battle net account system that was around during game release)
and I had no idea what my old login name / pass was.
So I went to my now current Battle Net account that uses a differ login than my ancient one and which has my now inactive for a year WoW account tied to it and
tried plugging in my ancient CD codes.

IT worked! They gave me new codes and links to download the client for D2 and D2 LoD expansion after I plugged in the old code for that.
Made sure to copy and paste the new codes to a safe spot as they were needed
for the install later.
Downloaded direct from them as the p2p crap was not working at all.

Installed the game fine, zero issues.
Ran the game fine, zero issues. (okay other than my eyes bleeding from the ancient graphics).

Did not try the glide wrapper yet, just the game defaults as is with both direct 3d and direct draw. (Be sure to run the vidtest thing first)

As for your 'issue' with seeing 25 fps limit. There is a reason for that.
The game in offline mode is HARD capped to 25FPS. Period.
In online mode the cap (as I recall) is either totally removed or capped at 60fps. I think totally removed. You can research that via google.

There may be a way around that with 'hacks' for offline but prob not worth it.
The game seems to behave well here with either Windowed mode or full screen.

I intend later today to try the glide patch. Might report back.

P.S. During my install there were no complaints about compatibility from Win 7. Nor have I done anything to the shortcut to force compatibility modes.
I think they did something to the digital download version that updated the installer to fix that issue. Must have as nothing here went wrong or ill during the install.

I still think Torchlight might be better for single play but this has been fun reinstalling. Going to give the default game some time then maybe try and find some old mods I used to use.

Cheers.

Okay, quick update.
Found and installed the old Glide wrapper.
Game looks much better using that (expected) as it always did look best on a 3dfx card.
Running it windowed now on machine here. Max window on 1920x1200 24 inch monitor.
Not bad at all and I don't' see nearly as much nasty pixelisation as I saw using direct3d or direct draw modes.

Wrapper can be found at:
Glide3-to-OpenGL-Wrapper
Google it first of course.
Glad to see this still works fine even on a modern Win 7 64bit system.
Least it does with my Nvidia 285GX. YMMV.

Oh, yes, and PS. /fps is still showing 25 FPS cause I'm in offline mode. This is normal for d2.

Oh, and another note. During my search I came up with a hack I found called D2multires mod.
I did try it but it does not work with ver 1.13 of D2. I would caution anyone fooling with that one
to ONLy use it offline and NEVEr log in to Bnet with it on. If you do, your account will be banned.
Of course that is moot mostly now as 1.13 i think is needed if you use Bnet now and it won't run on 1.13.
It only would work offline and with 1.12 or lower.

To the best of my knowledge this Glide wrapper will not cause a ban on bnet as it does not try to fool
with overall game res so it is not considered a cheat by any means. I recall using it some years ago with no issues with bnet then.
It works fine with 1.13.

I apologize that I'm necroing this thread, but I just wanted to say thanks to Uzi for the Glidewrapper. It works awesomely! Before installing that, I'd get all these weird ass colors in the game, but that fixed it! Thank you, Uzi.
