Doe anyone know how to disable Trim on these drives? I am using RollbackRx and it does not work with Trim on SSD's. I would like to purchase a new Intel SSD, but I don't want to give up Rollback.

Many thanks,

But you can check on the status of TRIM at the OS level (Win 7) and also enable or disable it via command line:

TRIM Commands

Go to the Command Prompt and type:

fsutil behavior query disabledeletenotify

DisableDeleteNotify = 1 (Windows TRIM commands are disabled)
DisableDeleteNotify = 0 (Windows TRIM commands are enabled)

To enable TRIM (if it's disabled), go to command prompt and type:

fsutil behavior set disabledeletenotify 0

To disable TRIM, to go command prompt and type:

fsutil behavior set disabledeletenotify 1

Silver0066, read Anandtech's article about SSD. SSD device is very fast compared to traditional mechanical HDD, but there is a catch to that speed. SSD have internal table to keep which block is free, which is not. Over time if you don't use Trim or do a "garbage collection", your SSD will lose it's speed advantage. Trim solved this issue, it will make the your SSD speedy all the time, without trim, the SSD processor must check and do copy-modify-write, it's very time consuming and you don't want that. As for backup - I suggest you change your backup strategy OR remove SSD from your current usage model.

karlsnooks,

Thank you very much. That is good news and just the answer I needed.

I currently have my System drive on 2 X25-e's (SLC) in RAID 0 and my data drive on a 80 Gb x-25m Gen 1 which has no TRIM support. I have not noticed any degradation on this drive after six months of heavy use with my 3 drive laptop using a 1 TB external drive thru the esata port.

I am getting a second notebook for my wife and I don't want to spend the extra money on x-e's and Rollback is very important to me as I do alot of experimentation.

Silver,
Glad to have been of assistance.

Hope you continue to receive good performance from the SSD. I've read the reasons for enabling trim, but I've never tried not using it and seeing if there were any deleterious effects.

My prediction is that the cost of SSDs will decrease and in the future the hard drive as we now know it will be in the Smithsonion.

Since every location on the SSD is directly addressable then defragmentation has no advantages. Thus, be sure to turn off any defragmentation schedule for the SSD.
