My disk drive is reporting as full. Checking it with WinDirStat, I have about 200G free. How do I get windows to realize its wrong?

When a hard drive reports as full it will almost always be correct. On the other hand, the results reported by programs such as WinDirStat are at best only an approximation. For a large number of reasons the numbers shown can be off by a wide margin. With large modern operating systems this is impossible to avoid.

You really are out of disk space. Others can best advise on how to deal with this.

Hi jrisebo,

I moved about 100G of files off the hard drive yesterday. Still no change in what its reporting.
When you say you moved the files, did you cut and paste them?
Have you restarted your computer since doing the move yesterday?
Have you tried running Disk Cleanup?

I hope this helps!

Ran disk cleanup
Still no space

Hi jrisebo,

Have you tried defragmenting to see if that makes a difference? I really can't understand why there has been no change in the free disk space. I assume that you have checked that the moved items are no longer there?

I hope this helps!

Yes, I have confirmed. Just deleted a 27 gig I tunes folder, still no change.

CHKDSK Found some errors, and also reported that I had about 150Gigs free. When restarted, still showing full.

Think its a malware or something I guess.

My disk is a SSD drive, says not to defrag?

Yea something is screwy. Windows says its a 476GB allocation. other shows it at 203GB. When I delete something, it then reports the new size. Gotta Love Microsoft. See attached.

Running Defrag will show you approx. what percentage of free space you have, by its graphic display. That should give you the most accurate estimate of how much free space is on the drive.

Found this from WinDirStat.... about 273GB in unknown. I cant figure you where these files are at, or how to delete. I think I am getting closer though.

So update, I deleted some more files, the "unknown" file/s is now up to 283GB, it went up about the same amount I deleted. Seems its something in the recycle/delete department. My recycle bin says I have 465GB of available space to recycle. This is getting weird.

Hi jrisebo, try running disk cleanup again and make sure that the boxes are checked.
