Hi Everyone,

I have been trying to hardwire network my old XP Pro SP3, and my new win7 systems. I am on the win7 system now.

Hardware consists of:
Network Everywhere NR041 Cable/DSL Router, and
Westell 6100-15 DSL Router
The usual Cat-5 Cables

I can get both PC's to see each other, and have shared Folders, but when they are both hooked up to the NR041 I can't get on to the Internet "DNS Server not found".

I have studied zzz2496's tutorial, this tutorial, post #10 http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/67636-xp-computers-windows-7-network-map.html , and been reading some of the posts here, and elsewhere.
Right now I am starting to get a skull-pain trying to figure this out..:what::shock:

Some readings I have taken:

It isn't listed here, but in Device Mgr. the Intel(R) 82578DC Gigabit Network Connection does have the correct MAC address.
I would have to double check, but there may be a software upgrade to the NR041.

I haven't tried the OpenDNS yet, but it runs fine on the XP machine. Nor have I tried the flush.bat on either PC.

I have to go out for a while so I won't be able to reply right away.

Thanks for any thought's

Anak

What are your real DNS server’s addresses? I see you are pointing to your router for 192.168.1.1 but that is that routers address where does it forward the DNS request to?

Make sure you don't have the wireless and the wired NICs on at the same time, especially if they are giving out the same addresses. Use one or the other but not both at the same time.

I honestly could not tell you WindowsStar. My best guess would be to Westell/verizon's servers.

Is there a way to find it, can I use the one that I always link to google?

It starts 72.70.xxx.xxx, but then that would always start me at google, right?
If not, then where do I enter it in the NIC card settings?

Would OpenDNS solve this?

I am hoping that only ONE of these devices is giving out DHCP and DNS, correct?

Let's try this on one of the computers set the DNS manually to:

208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

See if everything works right. If it does then do the same on the other computer.

Correct!

Let's try this on one of the computers set the DNS manually to:

208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
I went in to the Network and sharing Center
>Clicked on change adapter settings
>Clicked on Local area connections
>Right Clicked for Properties
>Clicked on Internet protocol version4 (TCP/IPv4)
>Clicked on properties and added the DNS numbers you provided on the general tab.

See attachment:
These numbers are..... OpenDNS?

See if everything works right. If it does then do the same on the other computer.
As soon as I hooked up the win7 PC to the NetWorkEverywhere (NR041) router I had Internet access!!, I then applied the same numbers to the XP PC, and had Internet access!!

I can feel my skull-pain going away, finnally!

Your an Angel, I don't know if your a guy or gal, but I'd give you a great big hug! right now!

:ar: In lieu of that I'll be spreadin' the rep.

Now I can explore the convenience of having two PC's networked.

Thank You again WindowsStar

Anak

Been sidetracked a little, but so far, so good.
I have been using google's DNS, and it does seem to be quicker.

If you qualify........You and yours have a great Father's Day!

Anak, one tiny question... In your router, look for DNS server. Cheap routers usually acts as DNS proxy (99.999% of the time). If you can find DNS in your router, try putting Google's DNS to it, and switch back DNS server TCP/IP property to "Obtain DNS server automatically" and renew the leash...

If it doesn't work, you can always switch back...

Xbox360 wired controller
Hi! zzz2496,

I accessed the setup page for my router, and made the changes you suggested.

As soon as I clicked apply/okay in my network adapter settings IE8 told me that I lost the internet connection, but the internet icon in the lower right of the taskbar never changed, it still told me that I had internet access.

All I did then was to close, and then re-start my browser, and I am now using those settings as I reply to your request.

Will try new settings.

But z, a tiny question...........

Can you iterate the advantages/disadvantages to this arraignment?

The advantage would be "simple", it's simpler to setup as such than to edit each computer and enter DNS server info to each and every computer manually. Btw, I set my router as such so that I only put my router as DNS server, it will forward any DNS query request to whatever DNS server I put in my router's DNS server config.
