Windows help infers that restore point is automatically created before I install a new program. Is this true?

Simple answer, yes it does.
I find it best to make one of my own, when I remember, as I have found in some cases a point is not made. Although it is rare that a point is not made

The ocurrance of a restore point being made before an install may be depended on how the program is installed.

I.e. if it is a Microsoft MSI installer then yes, if another installer that is fairly recent and Win Vista/7 compatible then yes. Older installers maybe not and of course "installs" like Blender where you unzip a file into your prgrams fodler.. no :D

For cases where I think I need a restore point and I'm not sure the installer would create one,
I use Single Click Restore Point
A neat little program that does just that :D

I've found this to be very true. Not on my personal laptop because I don't use it. On a few family members who do not have an ISR app, I've installed something for them thinking it would auto create a restore point only to find it didn't which menat a manual search and destroy after uninstall. Win 7 does make it a little more cumbersome to do the manual rs point so the shortcut rich mentions is a plus. Make it a habit to take one manually before any installation for MS and non MS related.

Thank you for your kind words,Richard.
I have another little gem that Bill2 pointed out last week:
QRM Plus Manager lets you create and selectively delete restore points | The Windows Club
That can be integrated into the Desktop context menu and can create (QRM Plus.exe) or even delete single restore points (QRM Manager.exe) if one so desires.

One thing tho after unpacking and move the package to Program Files or wherever, one should go to the compatibility tab of QRM Manager.exe and QRM Plus.exe and set it to run as Administrator (because "simple" Users don't see restore points)
