Yeah, Happy Birthday from me too, i suppose.

Getting back to the guts of this thread , if thats still o.k? :DThe advertising that annoys me most are those that target people who are new to internetting , and tries to scam them. I well remember thinking ..." Could i really be the millionth person to visit this site" or "can they really see what is on my harddrive like they claim, after all they have discovered my ip address and are warning me that i need their help to stay safe" or some other garbage desiegned to take advantage of my lack of internet savvy .

Surely advertisers are aware that clued up, experienced internet users block popups . They obviously think that they are investing their money wisely anyways.

Stuff 'em all . :)

Thanks, I suppose ;) :p

Yes, those ads aimed at scamming the inexperienced are just nefarious bottom feeders. Worse are those 'fake' ads that click jack you.

To test no-scripts ability, I clicked on a dodgy add to see what sort of shenanigans I was in for. It opened the main site, but it also attempted to connect to just over 300 different sites as well. I'm happy to say no-script did it's job.

Bloody Big Grin
All advertising annoys me to be honest, but especially those that pop up and sneak by noscript and adblock.
Hello SE!
long time no see...:p
ohh yes thats why is use a subscription to keep those nasty ones out
But you must remember no adverts = no Internet as I know for a fact I wouldn't be paying our $1800 server bill each month out of my own pocket.

I can understand the big publishers like IGN using these annoying ads as they will have a high percentage of repeat visitors who become more and more ad blind the more they visit.

As a publisher my preference is to only use a simple banner in the biggest click hotspot and only serve ads to guests, while this doesn't maximize revenue it pays the bills and doesn't make my sites look spammy.

which is why i only let the adsense through
its unobtrusive its most of time relevant and it might make me click on it...;)

wow nice estimate for running such a large website...
at least its worth more than what it costs (according to some websites;))
Problem with advertising is simple - it pays, and it pays well.

Take a looksie at Ask,com (for whom I just saw an advertisement ***ON MY F******G TV****)
Hello JG!
Yes i remember seeing the slew of them sometime ago
(same with ms search...;))

That company that was reviled as a borderline malicious adware company just a few short years ago is now *partnering* with the likes of Webroot, Symantec, and other such security 'giants'.

All you folks that like to block advertising b/c it annoys you - as soon as you start dishing out money to support the websites that you frequent, I'll accept your bitching and moaning and complaints as valid. Until then, you're just like everyone else out there trying to get something for nothing.

And before you go off half-cocked about how you pay for your ISP connection and whatnot - your ISP has *jack* to do with John running these sites (Seven Forums and Vistax64, to name a couple). You are just paying for Internet *access* - unless John is an employee of your ISP or has a family member that is an employees or is a trust fund baby from one of the Veeps of that ISP, your money to your ISP does absolutely nothing to help John foot the bill for these sites.

wow JG i was sure every knew this (or should know)
the internet runs on ads (well at least the good 75% of it does)
for the ISP payment you are just gaining access to the road (think of it as a toll booth)....
and thats it...
they give you acess but like it was said before the internet isnt free (not free in the sense that some somewhere has to pay for the hardware maintained among other things)

Well said John G and I would contribute as well but I don't have the means ATM, although I think this is the best and most friendly site on the net and the only one I that I keep coming back to.

Thanks for all your hard work and effort John, Shawn and Mod's hopefully one day I hope I to can show off my support badge for this site.
well i finally did hooray!...:)
hope you can be part of the team
(i used the money saved from my headphone budget (might as well it was the people here who have helped me and have now became friends with

OT but that sh*t! bookseller on amazon is taking forever with that book....
i was planning to have it by friday but im guessing its going to take longer as i dont see any response from him...

Thanks, I suppose ;) :p

you which ones i hate the most?
those flash/plugin based ones.....
especially when i want to conserve power (when on battery....)
i remember me and a fellow classmates where talking about this in our java class...
where it actually started with the way java started out (by using as little code as possible to minimize bandwidth and just loop once its cached on the users machine...
which is one of the reasons i love Minefield x64 (it forces me to use it without flash which i love...)
and if do want to use flash?
i just open the portable firefox (xenocoded of course)
and voila!
i have been a avid noscript fan and adblock plus for some time now (since its intro i think when they still had Firefox 1.05 or 1.5 i dont really remember...:))
and i have it on (blocking everything and including <IFRAME> which i know is overkill but hey that me say confidently that i can block effectively 99.99% of all web-malware + drive-by downloads...;))
i use to use the IE that was included in ME (which was good enough...)
and which at that time criminals where not attack the information highway (low bandwidth was the main cause for being able to stop ads from sucking any of my bandwidth....)
now its everywhere though....
you cant go into the internet without protection now these days....:(
