Edit authui.dll to add custom domain frame

I've been trying for some time to add my custom UI frame to domain login screen. I am hoping that someone out there can help.

I want to add the kitty cat user image to the frame. It's just the normal user image that came with windows.

I have ownership of authui.dll.
I grab the image with Resource Hacker.
I edited the file with GIMP to include the kitty cat.
I put the edited image back into the DLL and replace it in System32 and log off.
All I ever get is a black screen with a cursor.

I have a copy of the authui.dll that the user Danny on this forum create here. It actually works so I know editing it is possible. I was hoping, however, that someone could tell me what I'm doing wrong. Or just fix it.

I tried adding in a new bitmap with my edited one and was going to change the code to call the new bitmap instead of 12223 but Resource Hacker wont allow me to add a new bitmap. It's always empty when I try.

Please help me as this is driving me nuts!

The authui.dll is in both C:\Windows\System32 and C:\Windows\SysWOW64 after you have edited both then you need to restart your computer not log off.

Even if you change the frame with your image you will not see the Kitty it will show up when you change your user account image from the Control Panel.

Only the one in System32 needs to be edited.

I know the process, I'm just not getting results. I don't think you completely read my post as I clearly say I'm doing this in domain login which means that the account image is meaningless to the image I'm trying to edit.

I guess I have never seen the Domain login screen.

I just tried with Restorator 2007(probably the best program for editing system files out there but it is not free) using your image and it states that your bitmap is corrupt so that could be your problem.

Right the domain login is the one that makes the person enter both username and password.

And thanks for the info about my image. And the program. I'll go try and find it.

I don't know what could be causing the corruption. It's a simple GIMP export with Alpha channel. But I'm guess that is the issue. That being the case, I have no idea how to fix it.

OK I have seen the domain login.

Post the kitty picture here and I will try it in photoshop and if it works I will post the .dll for you.

Here you go, I tested it and it works fine. I also used gimp instead of Photoshop for better transparency.

I'll try this but I want to point out that the screen in your screenshot isn't the proper login screen and this screen could be created simply by selecting the proper user image. I'm hoping you used 12223 bitmap instead of the smaller main login frame.

No matter the outcome, I thank you for your time and attempt at helping me. I wonder why your image from GIMP worked while all the times I tried it was corrupt?

What is the difference between my logon screen in your domain logon screen, how do you set up a domain logon screen.

Yep I don't see how one would see a user image if the user has not been selected yet either

Op would have to change every user image to the kitty :/
