I found a memorex Slim External CD/DVD Writer 8x (Model No.: MRX-650LE v7) at a garage sale for $1.
It's a USB device about 6"x6"x1/2". I didn't know whether it would work and it didn't have an installation disk; but, for a buck...
I plugged it in an open USB port and fired up the old PC. Win 7 ran the plug & play and found its driver. It works great!
If you ever find one of these cheap - grab it.
