External HDD Connection via ethernet

Hi.I have an external 500GB HDD fitted to a caddy connected to the computer via USB also mains powered.
Is there any way that I can convert this item so that I can connect it to my router via an Ethernet cable,If so is it going to cost me an arm and leg or would I be better off getting a proper Ethernet enclosure for the HDD.
I have windows 7.

Hi trendy,

I always like Ethernet (especially if you have gigabit connections within your network). This way you can scale easier.

Drobo 5N" which allows you to up to 5 hard drives in any size within the machine and it will safely create a raid. Drobo-5n

AS things are now I can connect this HDD to my Brightbox router via an USB connection therefore I can gain access to that HDD from my desktop and my Laptop.
What I was thinking would it be okay to leave this HDD connected to the router 24/7 or would an ethernet be a better option,If it would be okay to leave it the USB connection well that would be fine with me.
It was a decision on the best option really.
The Brightbox router is supplied by my internet provider which is EE Was Orange
