external HDD, master or slave setting?

I just received my external enclosure which I will use my FAT32 drive, do I set It to master or slave Setting? Just want to save a little time and be sure I'm not fighting with Win 7 Settings.

Neither. Your drive will be treated as a USB device by Windows thus not requiring jumpers. I assume we are talking about an IDE drive you are putting into an enclosure? Check your enclosure documentation. It may ask to put it into master, it may not. If it doesn't work without setting it, set it to master and you should be good.

I would say master. As the last guy said some enclosures will state set up as master and in cases it would not matter Id still go with master.

If I did not know or no info with the enclosure- I would first guess master and maybe save my self from having to take it apart or open it up and fiddle with the lil jumper. Set it as master from the start it should be good to go and not have to open that sucker up ever again unless it breaks or an upgrade..

I am running for over 6 years now 2 Thermaltake silver river usb enclosers- 2 Seagate st3200822a
200g ata100 drives. Love both the silver rivers and the drives. I also have 2x st3200822as which are the sata 1.5g versions but can not use them now other than in my abit kn8 system- Well I think I could use 1 in this p55 system I think my jmicron runs 1 sata port on my mobo it is 1.5g If I read right.

Hmm Now that I think about it I might give 1 ago- I record my every step when gaming- 200 more gigs would be nice.

* They do look nice and match my color scheme. Most I have looked at in the recent past look cheap and have poor reviews.. My next extern will be sata and sata II III- I think you can get them that will do ide and all the sata drives in the one enclosure?..>



My silver river drives might have 8 hours total on them. I only plug in the power or turn them on when I need to add or get info off of them. I wish these silver rivers could also do sata and sataII and III I would be good to go. They are really nice enclosures- Aluminum and has a lil blue light fan too..

I need to get least 1 more enclosure that can use sata drives- or try and buy a new ide drive about 320 gigs- I am not sure you can even find them any more and at 7200rpm etc. I do not like drives much over 250 gigs 320 is about it for me. Can take for ever to scan or more to lose if they go bad.

These drives are fast tho and for being ide- info flies maybe the usb has something to do with it. I like and use both seagate and wd. Think I like seagate more tho. I have had wd drives die on me before but never any of my seagates.

Seagate invented scsi and sata and are true sata. Wd's are hybrids or use to be any way..

I know this this is an older Post, but question is relative to this topic.

Outside of needing an enclosure for a 2.5 WD1200BJ hard drive, which I have, what else do I need to use the hard drive as an external hard drive? The drive is set to Master and I still do not have any communications with my computer. I am certain that the drive works because it just came out of my older computer,

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If it is a SATA/Serial ATA drive you don't need to set a jumper. If it is a PATA/Parallel ATA drive you usually don't need to set a jumper unless using 2 such drives in a computer and both would use either a CS/Cable Select jumper or one would be Master and the other Slave. I recently put 2 PATA drives in portable cases, one a 120GB and the other a 320GB, formatted as FAT32 for use on Mac OS X computers to transfer data, neither drive required a jumper. The 2.5" SATA drives use the same cables/sockets as the 3.5" drives, separate power and data. The 2.5" PATA use a cable that provides both data and power, usually 43 pins plus 4 pins for the tiny jumpers.
