Solved FF v35.0.1 Reset Error (but loading page fine)

Hello people,

Upgraded from FF 20.0.1 to v35 a week back and ever since I keep getting a reset error on the eBay page, even though it loads fine. I would just ignore it but it's ginormous.



Happens in Safe Mode, and also with a new, virgin profile. Anyone know what causes this? TIA

If you go to Index page , and in the Search Boards: box enter `Ebay reset' without the quotation marks, you will get a number of links. The third one is a lengthy thread about the problem, complete with a solution for one Firefox user.

Thanks... I went there first a few days back to no avail, which is why I came here.

EDIT PS The vast majority of the threads there on this subject are also from ppl who can't get eBay to load, which is not my problem. But like I said, been there, done that, no tee shirt.

What causes it? Possibly upgrading Firefox rather than clean installing it - especially after jumping a few versions or auto-updating when a major upgrade is released.

Suggest a clean install.

Run MozBackup and backup your current Firefox Profile:

After deleting the folders mentioned press F5 to refresh the window in order to check that they've been deleted.

Then reboot.

If the problem is solved you'll need to restore your bookmarks and extensions using MozBackup.

Run MozBackup to restore your old profile. Just choose the settings that will restore your bookmarks and extensions. Ignore the rest.

Thanks for the post, but frankly updating Firefox should work without uninstalling even if you've skipped 20 versions. Mozilla (and open source software in general) sticks to industry standards and backwards compatibility more so than proprietary software. Updating should not cause a problem, unless of course something becomes corrupted, but that's a different issue.

Because of that I didn't want to bother with the uninstall/reinstall routine, because I didn't think it would help. Today I finally got some time and gave it a try anyway, and the same error persisted, even after a clean install, and before restoring anything from MozBU.

And it happens in safe mode too (as stated previously), but it didn't happen in FF 20.0.1... so it's some kind of bug in newer versions. BTW I installed v36 today when I did that clean install. Same error as in v35.0.1.

Will let it ride and keep my ear to the forums... probably one of those bugs that will take some time to nail. Thanks for your post.

It is incorrect to state that Firefox should update properly even when skipping multiple versions; doing that is known to frequently cause multiple problems, as attested to by the number of threads on this subject in mozillaZine. This is usually due to trying to use an existing Fx profile that contains entries that are invalid with the newer version of Fx and the like.

I don't know why you are unwilling to take the time to reinstall Fx, as that is likely to be the only way to solve your problem, and reinstalling does not even take much time. The easiest way, to me, is to remove the Fx program folder, install a new copy, create a new Fx profile, and start transferring files from the old profile to the new, testing as you copy the files.

It is not usually necessary to remove the Fx program folder, but it does happen: Some time ago, I encountered a strange problem which no advice helped me to fix; somewhat in desperation, I did remove the entire folder and having reinstalled Fx, but continuing to use my existing profile, the problem went away. Why that happened, I neither know nor care; to me, it was only important that the problem was remedied. It is possible that your problem is also caused by something in the Fx folder; I don't know that, of course, but to me it seems that it would be worth taking a few minutes to do this. (I may, however, misinterpreted what you meant by a "clean install;" perhaps you have already done what I have suggested. If that is so, then please don't have read this advice.)

Thanks for reinstalling FF anyway! A clean install fixes problems with corruption, faulty about:config tweaks, add ons that are out of date or no longer work and also ensures that there are no remnants of removed add ons that didn't uninstall cleanly.

On another note - I just updated to v36 and had connection problems. The same sites worked fine on other browsers. Eventually I tried clearing DNS cache and changing DNS Lookup provider. Guess what? Everything works.

Also I can't see your system specs in your profile. What's your AV and does it have SSL scanning?

This was it, Callender! Great job! THANKS! Use my ISPs DNS server, but to test the theory configured FF to use Tor via proxy and no more reset errors. So can either just use Tor proxy, or if I want a little faster browsing I can find a public DNS server I don't mind using. (Google is out, personally.)

BTW I use AVAST with SSL disabled, as I use Thunderbird email client in text mode only with encryption, so don't need SSL scanning.

Great news! Well I only really suspected that DNS Lookup might be the problem after my own recent issue.

Google - not for me either. Just used it as a test. Currently using Comodo Secure DNS.

I would trust Comodo more than most (I use them for my FW), but found this open-source NIC/DNS project I am super happy using. They have public DNS servers all over, but not sure if they are international, though would suspect so. - OpenNIC Project ... you can visit this page to see if they have DNS servers in your area... Your nearest OpenNIC DNS servers - OpenNIC Project ...and no more reset errors! What joy! They would also be least likely, I'd think, to have any vested interest in compiling IP profiles based on surfing... certainly less so than a private owned company (like even my ISP... or Comodo, though not accusing anyone, just saying... data = money).

So again, many kudos to you!

BTW is the Comodo Secure DNS service an https connection? Or do they just call it secure b/c it weeds out malicious sites? I do recall now when I installed Comodo (very long ago) I had a choice to install that DNS service and chose not to because (again) I don't like my traffic running through private companies... but if it was https that would be something to consider, at least as an alternative to the open NIC project should I want an alternative at any point.

I prefer something that blocks connection to known malicious sites hence my preference for Norton DNS. I had looked at OpenNIC some time ago but as far as I can work out it doesn't offer malicious site blocking.

How great! Will look into that in more depth at day's end. FTR the AV I use blocks known malicious sites, so not such a concern to me personally if the DNS server doesn't. Though it never hurts to have multiple layers of security and in other areas I certainly do.

I meant that personally I prefer Norton DNS but switched to Google DNS to see if it resolved connection issues and when it did I then switched to Comodo DNS for the time being. My intention would be to go back to Norton DNS in the near future. It does sometimes block domains that my main AV doesn't (Comodo CIS & Firewall)

OK, gotcha! LOL... I am a little O.C. about my computer setup too... always tweaking, adjusting, preening. Computers are pets with USB ports.
