I'm on Win 7 Ultimate x64.

I just upgraded to a 4K monitor, and I've read on some issues related high DPI displays, and this might be one of them. I've set the default magnification to 150% in my Windows 7 display settings. And for the most part things look ok. But I noticed some strange behavior within file explorer.

Here's an image for reference
Columns.jpg

You can see all that unnecessary extra space in the "Size" and "Date Modified" column. So naturally I try to drag the column width to make it smaller. But it wouldn't cooperate! If I try to make the Size column smaller, Explore jerks around and suddenly makes either the "Name" or "Date Modified" column bigger. Same if I try make one of the other columns smaller.

I've tried the Right click options on the columns: "Size Column to fit" and "Size all columns to fit". No good. It would still give me a bunch of unnecessary space in all columns.

This issue didn't happen on my old 1080p monitor. I can resize columns as I wished and they would behave.

Anyone have any idea what's happening and how to solve this?

Set Width

Have you tried specifying an exact size for columns?

  • Right click on the column header
  • Choose "More..." from the context menu
  • Click on the header you wish to set
  • Type the desired value in the box at the bottom
WE - Column Width 02.png
If that works, set your Folder Template so Windows will remember the settings.

I just tried that, with similar uncooperative results. =(
For example, I tried to set a column width to 50 pixels. Result - it remains at 130 pixels.

Minimum Width

The columns have a minimum width value. :)

In my Windows Explorer, with a default magnification of 100%, the smallest width that can be set is 80px, regardless of the value I enter (i.e. any value of <80px is reset to 80px when the window closes).

I'm not sure why your setup has a minimum width of 130px.
I would've assumed that the minimum would be 120px.

Hmm, even so, it's strange that it wouldn't stay at a width I try to drag it to. It IMMEDIATELY jerks back to whatever width it likes, and not only that, the other columns has similarly jerky behavior. The end result is that all columns have all this unnecessary white space (as you can see in the screenshot).

I distinctly recall before this monitor upgrade I can freely make the columns as tiny as I like.
