Mozilla is preparing to release the next major iteration of its open source browser, with the launch possibly happening in less than a week.

Nothing is set in stone at this point in time, but if everything goes well, Firefox 4.0 Final could be released to the public as soon as March 22nd, 2011.

Essentially, what Mozilla is trying to determine at this point in time is whether there will be a need to provide a second Release Candidate for Firefox 4.0.

I read in the other thread that it's not actually Mozilla's fault on the text rendering issue... But maybe I read wrong...

The RC has been running perfect for me, no crashes and no bugs encountered. But back when they were still working on their new jaeger monkey Javascript drive, I was experiencing whole browser crashes, thankfully they have moved on a long way on since then. The sooner this goes final, the better, it'd be one less update I'd have to keep track off. :)

This is due to an issue in MS Direct Write which must be fixed by MS and not Mozilla, it also affects IE9 btw ;)

I have been using FF for several years, currently have 3.6.15 installed. TBH, I find myself using IE9 almost exclusivley now. The FF 4 versions I installed were uninstalled very quickly.

It is good to have choices.

Yes, this is correct. On my work machine and on my laptop, I don't have a problem with either FF4 RC or IE9. On my home computer though, with an Nvidia card, and a 23" Acer monitor, both IE9 and FF4 RC have font issues. It looks like ass, it's really faded and inconsistent. If I turn off hardware acceleration on FF or turn compatibility view on in IE, the problem goes away.

But I've only seen the issue on 1 in 3 computers.

Before the final release they should make it more resource-friendly, FF 4.0 takes up a lot of RAM.

how much ram does chrome and ie9 usually use on your system?

I just opened all 3 browsers. IE9 RTW, FF 4 RC and Google Chrome 10.0.648.127. I opened up 3 tabs (Facebook, Windows 7 Forum and The Register)

Single Firefox instance taking 109,380KB

Chrome running 7 processes taking 130,512KB

IE9 running 4 processes taking 123,792KB.

So, they are all pretty close on my box.

Just for the sake of comparison, I opened up 3 sites in IE8 and the total RAM usage is 89,040KB, with three processes running the three sites.
