Five Ways Windows 7 Could Become another Vista

169849-windows7_logo_thumb_original.jpg

Windows 7 is finally here. The sun can shine and the birds can chirp. Ding dong, Windows Vista is dead! Perhaps that is a bit premature. Windows 7 hasn't been officially released for 24 hours yet, so its understandable if the jury is still deliberating. There are certainly those who think Windows 7 is nothing more than Windows Vista with an extra bell or whistle thrown in for eye candy.
To be honest, I like Windows 7 and believe it will be a phenomenal success for Microsoft. Earlier I wrote a post detailing 5 reasons to upgrade to Windows 7. But, just to play devil's advocate, let's take a look at 5 ways Windows 7 could become another Vista.

Five Reasons to Upgrade to Windows 7

Today is the day. The curtain has been raised and the confetti has fallen. Windows 7 is here. After the problems with the launch of Windows Vista-- both real and perceived-- many users are cautious about jumping on Windows 7 too quickly.
Windows 7 offers little more than incremental improvements and cosmetic enhancements over Windows Vista, and Windows Vista users may be wise to simply hold off until its time for a new PC. But the majority of users are still using Windows XP and even Vista users have reason to embrace Windows 7. Let's look at 5 reasons why you should make the switch to Windows 7 today.

If you actually read the five reasons they are so light weight; i mean seriously - you can't upgrade from XP?! That's really such an issue? Your computer will love you fo running a clean install on it and getting some fresh air into it's lungs.

A fresh install clears out the years of redundant crap you have backup on your pc and gets the PC ticking over nicely again.

I have to agree with the pricing issue. The cost is too high and will be a big obstacle for many along with too many versions. Home should be $50 and Professional $100. MS would sell more and 7 would replace XP very quickly.

I agree with this. I love the OS as does my wife, but $400 to upgrade two PC's to Pro. I think not. I would need pro do to the fact that my home recording set up runs in XP and alot of hoops for vista. My wife has alot of realestate software that woud only work with the pro version. They should have added XP support to home premium, as most home users have a crap load of XP software. I will not pay $400 and then spend more to get new software when what I have works, and works well. Just my 2 cents.

@1bowtie the issue is "preorder" there are alot of us who didn't get the pre order, you have to keep that in mind. Alot of nontech folk missed the preorder deal, hell alot of us tech people missed it!

geeve420, Sorry you didn't get in on the first pricing that Microsoft setup back in July. They established a pricing for those who helped in testing Win 7, albeit this was not tied to just those of us testing Win 7; it was put out to all. You could pre-order Win 7 at some great prices.

As far has using XP legacy applications within Win 7 that is not really a problem, you really don't need to spend the money on Pro or Ultimate you can download Microsystem's Virtual Box Virtual Machine application (free). Then you can run any version of Microsoft's Windows OS's. So as you can see there are options out there with just a little exploring. Enjoy Win 7 it really is a great OS. :)

meh, those 5 reasons were relatively minor. driver issues early in the game are always a pain to deal with, but i'm ok with that. i waited an extra 6 months to buy a new machine just so i could put windows 7 RTM on it. hopefully, enough good healthy competition will keep microsoft on its toes and prevent it from getting sloppy from time to time with its software releases.

Yeah I missed it by one day  Oh well, I still stand by the belief that had that kept that price structure they would move alot more people over.

Good point , I just don't know how well an intensive audio multitrack recording DAW would work within a virtual console. I never really tried. another point to that is people who don't know any better (as I didn't) would feel that going pro is the only way to use legacy software.

Just playing a bit of the Devil's advocate here :D

I hate how people are already saying its just vista with more eyecandy. Its not, i never got vista because of the reviews and tried windows 7 as a RC first to be carefull. I found it worked quite well and actually was faster then my xp installation, even with the eyecandy. And people complaining about moving files? DONT UPGRADE THEN! It took me most of yesterday to migrate everything but now im set.

Heres a suggestion, don't delete your xp partition. Make a new partition for windows 7 and size down the xp one to about 10gb left. Put the rest to windows 7, then add your xp folders to your library's on all the user accounts, easy. You may have to add permissions but that's easy as well.

People complain about the pricing but forget all too fast about what Vista saw there when first released! $399.99US for Ultimate retail full compared to 7's $319.99! and 7 wins the lot for being the better of the two as well! :D

As for the UAC that is actually an improvement in security for the novice user being seen there while in Vista the lack of level settings was a major drawback seen while 7 offers the level slider for adjustment. The advanced user on the other hand can simply disable that with a simple click and move on.

No upgrade from XP is nothing there either! You couldn't upgrade 9x to XP or 2000 direct to Vista either. What's new?
