Folder Properties General Tab doesn't show Folder 'Size', 'Contains'

Hello Friends,

Over the past few days I have noticed that my Folder Properties (Right Click > Properties) doesn't show the 'folder size' or the 'number of files/folders' the folder contains.

In the General Tab of the Folder Properties the following is displayed:

Size : 0 bytes
Size on disk : 0 bytes
Contains: 0 Files, 0 Folders

Everything else works fine. This problem is specific to the folders. In case of files all details are shown as usual.
In fact when I bring my mouse over the folders the tool tips DO show the folder size and also names of files they contain.

Also this is not because of the folder being empty or anything as this problem is for ALL folders invariably including the Windows folder.
I have tried using Command Prompt. The 'dir' command can list the folder size with no problems.
I also have all requisite permissions as I am the admin. Also UAC etc. is in place.

Additional Details: I have no problems moving folders, copy pasting etc. whatsoever and the computer is working totally fine. Only this problem stumps me.

Please help.

If you really need to know the size of a folder, you can use a powershell script or, easier, for normal-user is:
Use TreeSize Free which is one my favorite little program jewels.
JAM Software - Windows Freeware

Thanks for the prompt reply. I do use treesize but the problem is on a daily basis i want to see the number of files a folder contains and the size. Opening treesize everytime is very time consuming. Also this problem is new to my PC. Earlier it worked like a charm. In fact I have checked. My laptop doesn't have this problem. So it is not specific to windows as such.
Please help.

You will have the choice of downloading the 32bit version (x86) or the 64 bit version (x64).
The link will help you determine whether you are running a 32 bit version or 64 bit version of Windows

NOTE!! You can download and prepare a 32 bit version using a 64 bit version of Windows
NOTE!! You can download and prepare a 64 bit version using a 32bit version of Windows.

You run the 32 bit version on a 32 bit version of Windows.
You run the 64 bit version on a 64 bit version of Windows.

The 32 bit download file name is: mssstool32.exe
The 64 bit download file name is: mssstool64.exe

For the curious, this program was originally name Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper.


INSTALLATION:
You will need an Internet Connection.
Insert 512 mB (Microsoft’s 256 mB is no longer accurate) or larger USB stick into a usb port.
Run the downloaded program--mssstool64.exe or mssstool32.exe
NEXT button
Choose the option On a USB flash drive that is not password protected
NEXT button
NEXT button

The install program will format the usb stick using the NTFS format.
The install program will download about 210 mB.
The install program will name the USB stick WDO_Media32 or WDO_Media64
The WDO_Media32 usb stick will have used space of 255 mB (268,140,544 bytes)
The WDO_Media64 usb stick will have used space of 282 mB (296,165,376 bytes)
You can expect the number of mB to increase as more malware appears.

UPDATE Windows Defender Offline USB stick:
· reinsert the usb stick
· run the installation program, mssstool64.exe or mssstool32.exe, again.
· the update will download about 66 mB (mssstool32.exe) and 68 mB (mssstool64.exe).

Since the malware database is sometimes updated several times in a day, always update before running.

PERFORM AN OFFLINE SCAN
Bootup your computer from the USB stick
Windows Defender Offline will automatically perform a quick scan.
After the quick scan finishes, Choose Full Scan
Select all of your drives

The initial, full scan can easily take several hours, but
Remember, your computer is being very thoroughly checked for all types of malware.


RESULTS OF THE SCAN
The results will be in 4 log files on your computer's disk in:
\Windows\Microsoft Antimalware\Support
Upload the four log files please.

In the process of testing this writeup, i went thru the whole nine yards several times. Best if you have a large disk is to start the full scan and then go to sleep, go watch a NBA playoff game, visit your local pub, and so on.

Thanks a lot. But before I dive into this process, just a small question. I have Malwarebytes Antimalware. And I regularly scan it including yesterday. Still would this be helpful?

MalwareBytes runs after Win 7 has started, thus missing some malware.

WDO is an offline program and does not start your Win 7.

Tried that. Doesn't work. In fact I tried make a new profile and also start in safe mode so that I could check if the problem persists in the default settings. Still the same problem. So I don't think it something to do with my settings.

Did the whole full scan as you instructed. Found nothing. Zilch. Totally clean.
What now?

I think I have messed up some registry settings. Could you help me locate the registry entry which relates to the Folder Properties?

You could try the Microsoft System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) and read the associated Seven Forums tutorial How to Analyze the System Update Readiness Tool CheckSur.log

SURT might not fix your specific problem, it is a good companion to SFC. It's a big download (windows cab files) and it runs long just like SFC. I run it once or twice a year even if WU doesn't prompt me.

Ok, see what you get with SURT, if you decide to run it, then back to karl.
