Hi

one of the partitions on my USB attached hard drive is showing as RAW, is there
a way to format to NTFS without losing the data on the partition?

Thanks

Daniel

Hi @daniellouwrens!

Once you format the drive all the information stored on it become invisible or is being deleted. That why the first thing I'd suggest to try is extracting the data from the external with Linux Live CD:

1. First download and burn the ISO image of Linux to a bootable media.
2. Change the boot order so the PC could boot from Linux and restart the computer.
3. Once you boot in Linux try and mount the drive (or if Linux can read it, it will mount by itself).
4. If it appears along with your data try to transfer the files from the external.

Here's a KB article you can check for more information if you want:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD

Once the data is retrieved you can format the drive.

Let me know how it went.
