Ok so I installed both updates for Dx and the run time libraries and there is un-noticeable difference. I think until new drivers are available and there are more windows updates Im just going to stick with XP. Im slightly gutted really it would have been nice to finally move away from XP, performance is a big issue for me and I can't be happy playing games on W7 knowing I could have twice the performance on a different OS. More suggestions are welcome though

Tell me about it. It's pretty disappointing when a 10 year old version of Windows still outperforms the new versions in many areas.

Have you tried the 32-bit version of Windows 7? It should perform better in most games than does the x64 version.

Hi frenzy123 sorry to hear that didnt help. I run windows 7 professional x64 and have no problems playing games. The fps i get is about the same as when i used Vista Ultimate x64.

The only thing i can suggest doing is for you to increase your partition to 25 G or 30 G then format it and do a clean install. Once installed update all your drivers, install the direct X and C++ i gave you then install only 1 game. Nothing else should be installed. Once its installed defrag your entire hard drive using these two shortcuts in the View attachment 31136 then reboot and then try playing the game.

Also make sure you have your pc set to high performance under the power options.

thx for the input guys most useful, my main concern was that I had missed something out. It turns out I hadn't which is fine, I have high hopes for future W7 updates and I hope game performance increases.

I'm having problems with Assassin's Creed at the moment, don't know if you guys can help at all. The AC Trilogy are really the only demanding games I play, so it could be a more general issue with my computer.

I'm having the following issues after replaying AC 1 after about 5 months of playing old games:

1. Poor graphic quality. Aliasing all over the place and flicker in the background, which is a smidgeon distracting.

2. When I quit the game and (as players of AC 1 will know) I have to go into my profile in order to quit to desktop, the PC consistently freezes, sometimes with a black and white lined screen, sometimes with a black screen, and the game audio freezes as well.

It's a real pain in the derriere, considering that I've already played through AC 1 & 2 on my machine without noticing any graphical or performance issues.

Have you updated your DirectX files - Download Details - Microsoft Download Center - DirectX End-User Runtime

If that doesn't work for you try the direct file download - Download Details - Microsoft Download Center - DirectX Redist (June 2010)

Many thanks sygnus21, I'd already got the latest drivers but I hadn't thought of DirectX files. I'll give that a go and see if there's any improvement.

@Denique, I am curious but have you installed the patches for the game? I finished playing Assassin's Creed 2 and 1 both on Windows 7 and experienced no issues other than second game having horrible graphics but that is mainly because it was a console port. Things only got better in the game from the Venice level. The in game cut scenes and character face textures were just disgusting to look at. God I hate consoles! They ruin PC gaming in every possible way! Sorry about the rant

I have installed the patches for AC 1, I think! When I started it up this time after a long while, it did a wee patch update thing automatically before the game loaded. I assume that included all the latest stuff.

It's funny you should mention weird character face textures, I've been getting that as well, they all looks a bit blurry. I really don't know why that happens!

Forgive my ignorance here digitalrurouni, but what d'you mean by a 'console port'? I've only ever had PCs, so I know nowt about consoles!

My performance issues have gone, and so have the crashing, the problem there was that I had the resolution set too high in an attempt to get rid of the aliasing. Now it's set to 1366 x 768.

I think I might switch to my 1366 x 768 monitor to play the game, rather than the 1920 x 1080 one I'm using at the moment. Will that help the problem of stepping, d'you think?
