good dvd ripper ?

anyone no of a good and easy dvd ripper as i am going away soon. and would like to put them on my girlfriends laptop to watch them. but i can't seem to work out which is best to use so please tell me what you use and how good it is thanks.

Actually MakeMKV does a good job of ripping DVD to .mkv files. SPlayer plays them fine. WMP 12 works too, as well as many others. I just like SPlayer since it has a nice portable version.

The DVDFab HD Decrypter suggested by pparks is by far the best ripper. The ripped DVD folders can show up in the Mediacenter, ready to play. But the free version can only rip the full DVD. That would mean near 9GB space on the laptop's HDD for each DVD. If you have many DVDs consider saving the rips to an USB external HDD.

Using MakeMKV as suggested by MilesAhead is the next best solution. The advantage is that you can select only the main movie,one audio track and one subtitle when converting it to MKV. It does not recode anything but saves the original contents of the DVD in the mkv container. Expect near 4GB space requirement for each DVD. However WMP/7MC does not natively support mkv files. Download and install Media Player Classic - Home Cinema Download Media Player Classic Home Cinema, Free Video Player Download and you are through.

( Incidentally MPC Home Cinema can also play Bluray movies with DVDFab Passkeylite running in the background. So why not gift an USB external Bluray Combo drive (Bluray Player/DVD CD writer - an OEM drive without any software will do )to your GF? You may then burn 1:1 copies of all your DVDs on blanks using DVDFab HD Decrypter and present those to her alongwith a few Bluray Movies. Wouldn't she love it/you more? )

I've tried various programs, and, of the ones I've tried, I've found that this program works the best for me.

thanks guys i will have a look at them but would like them to be avi at around 600mb to 700mb. as it only has a 320gb hdd but thanks anyways i will try them all out what i get time.

So the obvious question for me is how's it working under Windows 7 x64 SP1. I saw the system requirements but it makes no mention of 64. I've been interested in getting a DVD ripper as well

It should work fine. I've had no problems with it, and I've used it with Windows 8 Build 7989 64-bit.

For such small file size with a full length film you are better off with x264 in .mp4 container. Check out Quick AVI Creator

The name is unfortunate as it tends to obscure the fact the encoder outputs .mkv and .mp4 in addition to .avi.

SPlayer also supports .mp4 in HD and SD resolutions on Windows7. If you search "portable" on the page in the link you can download the portable version.

Also this thread may give some insight when using Quick. The program is a bit unusual in the style of the GUI. But it's a front end using Python scripts. If you are willing to learn AviSynth basics such as resize filters etc.. then you can do quite a lot with it.

In your case, converting DVD video to .mp4 you shouldn't have to edit the .avs script. Just use it as is. You can still use MakeMKV as ripper. Just convert the .mkv to .mp4 using Quick.
